It would be too wordy to explain in detail, but having a weird moment of realizing Catholic church-run primary school experience has gestated within me this gnostic/secular interest in Christianity that views symbolic Christ and relevant imagery as both socialist and deeply (homo)erotic.

Some unstructured 5e thoughts in The Age of 5th Edition
D&D 5e’s runaway success is so fascinating to observe, because a lot of its driving force seems to lie behind ubiquity more than genuine quality. I would put money on one of the big reasons people pick it being “it’s what everyone’s playing,” more than any kind of testament to its design.

Because let’s be real here, D&D 5e is one of the most watered down versions of D&D around. 4th edition saw some people going “Oh 3e is too dense and confusing” and streamlined it to hell, imo becoming one of the best editions because it fully leans into what D&D is good at, which is combat. Then people complained it was *too* streamlined, so they just went back to 3e but meticulously flattened the numbers and complexity. On the surface, I can see the intended appeal of 5e. It’s *just* easy enough to get into (if you have a friend who knows how to play or you watch a live-play), and the rules focus more on structured combat weighted towards player victory, while keeping the rules for roleplaying light so you can keep it freeform and away from momentum-killing dice rolls. (Though tbh like, most tabletop games do that already lmao) But like… Didn’t 4e already do that? And at a certain point, don’t you just start adding in home-brew upon home-brew because the flatness of 5e becomes apparent the more you play? If someone’s played a bunch of other games and decided 5e is absolutely the one they want to play, then fine, go have a blast, I’m not here to dunk on anyone’s favourite. But at least tell me you played something else. 

Inevitably, the ubiquity of 5e has now gone from “It’s hard to find a game where people aren’t playing 5e” to “companies are now just making their game 5e to try and cash in on the popularity”. 5e has become the Roblox of the tabletop scene; fuck it, just force it into 5e, it’s close enough if you dim the lights and don’t think too hard about it. 

Just a big ramble, anyway. In conclusion, try other games, especially 4th edition, which always felt like it never quite got its fun in the sun. Genuinely one of the best combat systems out there. And fuck WotC anyway for leaning fully into AI and monopolisation. All companies suck under capitalism, but some really do suck a little more than others. For my personal recs; if you want a big deep world with fun roleplaying opportunities baked in, try World of Darkness; if you want deep and character-driven role-play, try Burning Wheel; if you want a cozy adventure with no combat, try Golden Sky Stories; hell, just check itch.io for countless Indies, you’ll probably stumble upon something that’s exactly what you want to see.

Big and small, I've had single-person businesses rip me to shreds over how their colors turned out on newsprint, and have worked with huge companies with THICK brand guidelines with every detail of their brand identity laid out and enforced with an iron fist. But I guess all of that stuff doesn't matter anymore? Who gives a fuck if this Al generated baby has six fingers, that mom-and-pop shop is still going to use it. That rug from Temu says Happy Thanksgivirg? Oh well haha it's just a silly funny thing now (nevermind that you never would have given a B-grade item from a craft show the same consideration). I don't actually care that the Al Coca-cola ad has a truck that changes size every scene, but I can't help but think about how, if it had been some poor underpaid artist, they would have been laughed out of the building. I don't really know how to put it in a succint way but it just feels all the more obvious how much more grace and flexibility has always been possible but never offered.

Thoughts about “AI” Yes it’s: The slop The theft The brainrot The loss of work The crumbling of creator rights The destroying of the environment and infrastructure But it's also the destroying of trust in anything that you’re not seeing with your own eyes right in front of you. Wonder now turned to the narrowing of eyes in immediate scepticism seeing something magical. Questioning the realness of everything from a stilted written apology to profound works by students in school. It feels like a slow poison to creativity and humanity at large.
