He's rough around the edges, giving Max Harper a run for his money as the town gloom squad leader, but I just want to hug him. On the other hand, Nate Wright frequently rubs me the wrong way. He's self-absorbed for much of the book and acts like a Neanderthal on too many occasions. He's not a bad guy, just an inconsiderate boyfriend and friend. Overall, I like their story. It's definitely steamy, humorous, scary, and intriguing. I fall more for this town of misfits and those looking for a place to belong with every turn of the page. I can't wait for the next installment. I read along with the audio book. I really like the narrators, Lee Samuels and Kitty Bang. I'll be upfront about the darkness, it is 100% present. Some things are predictable and expected based on where the last book left off and the general tone of the series, but there are a couple of things that really get to me. They don't gut me, but it is close. I do love River Rose Fox Volpe Mancini's spirit. She is fierce and a survivor through and through. Her pairing with Marco Mancini works in unexpected ways. I love them together! -- Book quote 'I pause then turn my sharp gaze on Elizabeth. “Cross me and I will slit your throat.”' -- River Fox Mancini Please do check your triggers for this series. There's light and humor, but there's also frequent, very descriptive dark elements that you should beware. This series really needs to be read in order. The storyline builds with every book and references to earlier ones are often. Also, this is more HFN than HEA, with the door being left open for spinoff series. I listened to the book before reading along with the audio. The narrators, Sean Masters, Ryan Lee Dunlap, and Kallestra / Kalestra Spencer (I cannot definitively confirm which spelling is correct, and it's driving me crazy), continue to do a great job with this series. 🎧🩷🎧 Story: 5 stars Narration: 4.5 stars Listening Speed: 1.8x

It catches my attention quickly and has me ensuring I get to the end in short order. One thing that has me on the fence with my rating is the toying with fidelity. The line is definitely blurred, in my opinion, but not entirely crossed as Mari and Jake Barnes explore music and the past together. -- Book quote Jake Barnes: “You always drink like a man?” Amara Johnson: “I like what I like. Who says it’s a man’s drink?” Jake Barnes: “Apparently, everyone but you." I love that she normally holds her ground, be it with Jake, Phillip the fiancé, her family, or others. She doesn't apologize for liking what she likes. That said, from early on, I struggle with her relationship with Phillip. How can they be together for as long as they have, and he be so completely clueless about a love of hers that's soul deep? It's baffling. I borrowed the audio book. Even though I had to kick the speed up (I finished about half an hour before my loan ran out), I really liked the narrators, iiKane and Benjamin Charles. 😉 🎧🧡🎧 Story: 4 stars Narration: 4 stars Listening Speed: 2.5x

This is a standalone and can be read as such, but I love that we get to spend time with Alicia's extended family, getting glimpses of their HEAs after their books have closed. The love they have for each other is like a nice warm blanket that I want to stay cocooned in. 😍 I read along with the audio book. The narrator, Lucy Malone, is a good choice for Alicia, but a male counterpart would have been awesome. That's really the only downside, I think. It is gritty and dark (check your triggers), as well as sweet and loving. In other DFMC news, it was great to see the other women and how they've come together. I also love seeing how their lives and families have grown. Plus, there are crossovers - by mention and by presence - of other MCs in Harley's universe, which I always love to see. The Drew storyline gets a little... weird. I honestly think the story could've done without the extra special twist. I love Sloane's strength and determination. I love how she works to rise above her circumstances, even without knowing how. He actions are admirable, and I love how she continues to work towards getting those she cares about to safety and keeping them safe and thriving. -- Book quote 'My whole life I’d been a part of this group. I was born into it. I didn’t intend to die here as well.' -- Sloane Hargrove The affections that grow between Rip and Sloane are deep and realistic (and hot), taking several weeks for them to trust one another in any meaningful way, sharing more and more of themselves one little bit at a time. I truly love how organic it is, especially when you consider the circumstances. I don't want to give anything away, but when the story returns to the clubhouse, I adore how welcoming the men and women are, how they work to be respectful of triggers, and more.
