Nory Sontay Ramos was a thriving high school student in L.A. until she and her mom were deported by the Trump administration in July. For @msnbc.com, we visited her in Guatemala as she tries to graduate remotely while hiding from the same gang they fled years ago. www.msnbc.com/msnbc/news/n...
The disappearance of Nory Sontay Ramos
Nory and her mother were following the rules. But as MSNBC reports from L.A. and Guatemala, U.S. officials deported them anyway — throwing their futures into jeopardy.

Undocumented immigrants pay almost $100 billion in taxes each year.

The top 1% evade $163 billion in taxes each year.

Stop pretending that immigrants are the ones taking advantage of taxpayers.

85% of the world lives in the Global South. 🌍

But we receive less than
25% of development financing. 💸

Less than 2% of aid directly reaches local NGOs. 💔

Yet we suffer 90% of climate deaths. 🌡️

Moments after Horace Peterson learned his 52 years of incarceration were coming to an end, he looked into the courtroom’s gallery, cracked a smile and waved to his 11-year-old great grandson.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Requiring people to work to access healthcare is a classic eugenicist platform. It says that only those who are healthy and fit enough for jobs are worthy of care.

The GOP plan to impose Medicaid work requirements is cruel and grotesque; it should be labelled as such by media.

Did you know the “weekend” and working only 8 hours per day used to be considered a radical, liberal idea?

139 years ago today, in Bay View, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 7 workers (including a 13 yo) lost their lives to advance this revolutionary idea.

Mr. Ceesay is a 63-year old man thrown into ICE detention with no warning in February after 14 years of check-ins — where he had a heart attack soon after.

Judge Vilardo uses his case to emphasize WHY due process matters, even if deportation is the outcome. It's worth reading this whole thing.

The chaos this is causing is absolutely cruel and absolutely intentional.
Last week the Trump administration fired another 8 immigration judges. One judge was fired in the middle of an asylum hearing and had to walk off the bench before the hearing was over!

There are now nearly 50 FEWER immigration judges than when Trump took office!
An immigration judge was fired mid-hearing and forced to walk out in the middle of a case. One of dozens who were abruptly let go without cause via email. This is how the Trump admin is addressing our backlogged immigration system. It’s as if they want it to implode. www.latimes.com/cali...

This is an incredibly important point. One way folks can help is by reaching out to local immigrants rights orgs and asking if they have volunteer opportunities to accompany people at ICE check-ins. If not, what a great project to start in your community!
You know the *only* reason he got out so fast was a reporter live posted about this for hours. And, a large amount of public pressure.

Every time someone gets grabbed, there has to be a robust public response immediately.
