I'd assume Dragon Quest IV got the ball rolling in this regard.

Either way it's a quick and cheap way to get a sympathetic motivation, while also clearly being potentially problematic.

In fairness that was literally its Japanese name. That being said keeping the JP name was a sign that Saban was basically going through the motions for the Goseiger footage to get to what they really wanted, the Legend War.

Funnily enough as a fan of clusterfuck Zords I agree with this. (Though apparently DaiBouken was popular enough to be one of the four selected as inspirations for the Zenkaiger team.)

I get why they didn't do it, though - this was the year where they got a new suit actor for the mechs since the old one retired, and they wanted to show how the new guy was much more agile, so they kept the "canon" mechs/Megazords on the leaner, simpler side of things.

One thing I wish we had gotten in Ryusoulger/Dino Fury: A proper Ultrazord.

Like the show's gimmick was that you have Lego-style connectors on every mech/Zord, so why not have everyone combine for an ultimate combo?

I think their problem is that they're a bit too overdesigned. Details sculpted where they aren't needed, that kind of stuff.

Though I guess I'd take this over the increasingly simplistic stuff we got up until around, say, Don Onitaijin.

The Sentai footage is the same, but I remember the DX DaiBouken being a far better toy than the DriveMax Megazord toy. Around this time Bandai of America started cost-cutting and they made the toys worse.
