Have you gotten in touch with Lily Hughes at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences? She is the curator of their fish collection. She might be interested in documenting a non-native species.

I would crash if I was driving down I-40 and passed Alvin on a flatbed.

Wishing fair winds and following tides to #Alvin, as the iconic submersible trades the deep sea for the Interstate!

The nation’s deepest-diving human-occupied vehicle departed San Diego today by truck, and will traverse deserts, mountains, and plains to arrive in Woods Hole by Thursday.

New paper led by @seaprinceaaron.bsky.social in @currentbiology.bsky.social looking at the threats deep sea mining poses for sharks, rays, and chimaeras. We found 30 species are threatened via various pathways including collector impact and plumes at depth and pelagic discharge plumes.
Figure 1: highlighting various pathways through which mining can impact sharks, rays, and chimaeras including collector impact and plumes, and discharge plumes. Figure 2: The diversity of sharks, rays, and chimaeras impacted by deep sea mining operations. Nearly 2/3 of these species are already at an elevated risk of extinction.

Does anyone know what's up with the Southeastern Regional Taxonomic Center? It is (was) part of the Marine Resources Research Institute of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. I have a question about a fish that came from their center but cannot reach anyone there. Thanks!

imagine if a family of beavers randomly showed up right now and finished whatever thing you've been putting off
In early 2025, beaver activity in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic, contributed to the restoration of a wetland ecosystem. A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that coincidentally accomplished environmental goals of the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million,
