heads up that bluesky doesnt show posts from other languages by default on your timeline, and its cutting you off from a lot of the community

go to bsky.app/settings/lan... and deselect any language from this setting, or else you might not see any of the new japanese users at all!

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things.

Here’s a blurb on what I mean:
Some thoughts: When using GenAi as a mood board you don't get sources. This means you deprive yourself from knowledge. You generated a location? You deprived yourself of knowing more about the interesting parts of the world and why things came to be. Generate an armor or costume? You deprived yourself on real world techniques, function, form and history. You generated art inspirations? You deprive yourself of learning about artists from history or lock out living ones from potentially being hired. Ethical issues of using GenAi models aside, one ends up making visuals mood boards devoid of reality and history. With it one deprives themselves from learning about our world and who is living in it, inadvertently making your work weaker, because of how detached it is from our shared human reality and history.

Opera O calling Manhattan Cafe a "Companion of Leckermaul" immediately brought to mind "Friend of Dorothy"
A conversation from the game Uma Musume Pretty Derby between the characters Meisho Doto and T.M. Opera O that occurs in Manhattan Cafe's Career. Opera O refers to Cafe as a companion of Leckermaul A screenshot of the wikipedia page for Friend of Dorothy reading "A "friend of Dorothy" (FOD) is a code word for a gay man, first used in LGBTQ slang.[1] Stating that, or asking if, someone is a friend of Dorothy is a furtive way of suggesting sexual orientation while avoiding hostility.[2] The term was likely based on the character Dorothy Gale of the Oz series of novels, which have been interpreted as including much queer subtext. Actress Judy Garland, who portrayed Dorothy in the 1939 Wizard of Oz film, is considered a gay icon. Writer and critic Dorothy Parker is thought to be another potential origin of the term. The "friend of Dorothy" code word was commonly used throughout the 20th century, but its use has declined in recent decades as LGBT acceptance has advanced."

There's an unsurprising tendency across leaders in the tech world (games included) to see art as merely part of something's production line, a box that needs to be ticked before copies can be sold. It's why AI is often justified as something that saves time, or saves money. But with art, that process is the point. The themes and ideas artists draw on, the way they iterate through those ideas with sketches, the work itself is what creates art. There are no shortcuts.
