Thanks to @kenlayne.bsky.social talking about the holidays in Sante Fe and Taos on the latest Desert Oracle; @courtneydn.bsky.social and I are fantasizing (planning) a return trip to both places. Plus, as former Las Vegans we can vouch for both Sam’s Town and Ethel M’s at Christmas.

I can't believe that the atomic clock (that people use for encryption) was disrupted by a power outage and they didn't have a weather-proof backup system. This country is a clown circus 🤡.

NIST Boulder time servers went offline Dec 17 after power failure. Backup generator failed. Atomic clocks on battery. Here's what broke and how to protect your systems.

Newark Penn Station is my favorite transit center in the US (with Grand Central Terminal right behind). Absolutely gorgeous with architectural and artistic details everywhere. Still has benches you can relax on without dividers. Arrival/Departure sign that rattles when it changes. Just perfect.

My latest: “That is a world worth fighting for with everything we have, including using our most sacred symbols and in physically standing between menacing forces and their intended targets. This Advent, we are invited to prepare ourselves anew for this reversal of power. Are we ready?”
For today’s Unsettling Advent entry, @revdrmichaelwoolf.bsky.social writes that God is still coming into being, even amidst the cruelty of ICE and the terror of state violence.

“It must have seemed hopeless in first-century Palestine ... but that is where the light of the world chooses to be born.”

Next weekend I am finally going to St. Dymphna's national shrine in Massillon, OH! I am starting an effort to convince the ELCA Lutheran Church to add her to their calendar of saints, and I'll also interview people for a project that'll be out in January.

I will also be eating my weight in pierogi.

I was slammed to the ground and arrested outside an ICE facility. It was a holy experience.
Internment sites are being operated across the country, writes a Chicago pastor. What we do with this knowledge tells us everything about the Christians we are.

Tip of the day from Shaker music theory book discussing "speediometers" (metronomes) - and what to do without one:

"A bullet, attached to a smooth string, 39 1-2 inches long, from point of suspension, to the center of the ball, will very nearly vibrate seconds."
