I'm going to do a real casual #Drawtober this year, and just send a quick snap of whatever I've done over the day! Could be work stuff, comic stuff, teaching stuff, who knows! Today will start with a #sketchbook drawing.

My college mentor had me look at different artists' original inked pages- scuff marks, whiteout and all- and that completely changed my perception of what it means to create a piece of work that is intended for reproduction.

The finished product isn't ever as clean as you think.

Seeing the Bill Watterson originals full of pencil lines of stuff that didn’t work, scuffs the eraser didn’t pick up, white out galore and more was something I needed to see to remind myself that nothing is perfect the first go and tweaks need to be made and you’re allowed to try again.

I keep getting this feeling that I don't know enough about the things I want to draw in order to draw them, but I'm not sure what "knowing enough" would even look like.

Today is Lughnasadh, the harvest festival named after the Irish god Lugh for the funerary games he established in the name of his foster mother, Tailtiu, after her death. Lugh is described like a streak of light in some tales, racing across the country, a powerful horseman and warrior.
