Instead the government chose the F/A-18 A/B. It was more affordable and cost less to keep flying . It turned out to be a great choice. Giving 40+ years of sterling service. My point is, the government should look to the past in making the present choice.

I vividly remember the series War by Gwynne Dyer and him describing how new NATO fighters like the F-15 were fragile and prone to break while they had an 80%+ availability rate. Isn’t that why we got rid of the Voodoo and Starfighter for the Hornet. They were hangar queens, like the Hornet now.

The F-35 is a stealth strike fighter, for day one warfare. it does posess incredible capability but it still saddled with a 50% reliability and mission readiness rate, after 20 years of development and production. That is horrendous, and the maintenance costs devour operating budgets.
