“In the Shadow of the Holocaust: Short Fiction by Jewish Writers from the Soviet Union”—a collection of ten stories Harriet Murav and I translated from Yiddish and Russian—is now available to order wherever books are sold, including the publisher’s website ($20). www.sup.org/books/jewish...
We write in our intro: “the authors we translate explore fundamental questions about the Holocaust and other mass killings and genocides of the past and present […]: how to provide testimony, how to memorialize victims, and how to live in the face of overwhelming destruction.” bit.ly/HolocaustLit...
Good for @newyorkstateag.bsky.social for successfully suing the bullies of Betar. Standing up to bullies, especially militant ones, is key to surviving this fascist moment. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/13/n...

Deborah Lipstadt didn’t wait until the suspect in the MS synagogue fire was arrested. She wanted to use the moment to blame protesters against genocide in Gaza. At his court appearance today, the suspect said “Jesus Christ is Lord” when read his rights by judge. Lipstadt is a shameless propagandist.

The officer here is a murderer because he committed murder.
Homan: "We gotta stop the hateful rhetoric. Saying this officer is a murderer is dangerous. It's just ridiculous. It's gonna infuriate people more which means there's gonna be more incidents like this."

“Slop” is the word of the year according to @americandialect.org — and I’m not surprised in the least. 🖕AI.
The American Dialect Society's Word of the Year is SLOP!

“Slop isn’t a new word. It has moved from the pig sty, to the algorithm, and now forms newcompounds such as sloppunk, slopification, and friend slop,” Dr. Kelly Elizabeth Wright said. “This productivity has no end in sight.” 🧵

Fucking ghoul
A woman recording an ICE agent tells him "Shame on you."

The agent responds, "Have you all not learned from the past couple of days?"

"Learned what?" she asks

Then he knocks her phone out of her hand

DHS was created to FIGHT terrorists, not to BE terrorists. It needs to be defunded by congress in 2027, and we should select candidates who run on that platform.

I was just denied access to the ICE processing center at the Whipple Building.

Members of Congress have a legal right and constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight where people are being detained.

The public deserves to know what is taking place in ICE facilities.
JUST NOW: Huge mass of agents in a standoff, weapons drawn as Reps. Ilhan Omar, Angie Craig, and Kelly Morrison attempt to conduct congressional oversight at the Whipple Building, which has been HQ for thousands of ICE agents.

rare to see an american politician speak in these terms and it rocks
“When I speak about making our city more affordable, my vision is not limited to the homes that we live in or the child care that we’re making universal — it’s also a vision where we make it possible for working people to afford lives of joy, of art, of rest, of expression.”

One friend @modernlanguage.bsky.social conference sent me this photo of the @stanfordpress.bsky.social book display and another friend told me that she’s the person, on whose account the “reserved” sign has been placed on this display copy of my and Harriet Murav’s “In the Shadow of the Holocaust.”

The same people who spent yesterday, and the past five years, insisting a Black police officer who shot an insurrectionist breaking into the Capitol should be prosecuted are today bending over backwards to defend an ICE agent who shot a woman in her car in cold blood.

Scum.

Let’s cut through some of the bullshit and lies…

Looking quite likely that this is the case.
my sense is this: not only are trump and rubio and hegseth lying to the public about the purposes, impact, planning, etc of the attack on venezuela. they are lying to each other. they have no idea what they're doing or where this ends.

Nixon insisted the bombing of Cambodia was just targeting Viet Cong outposts there and not meant to undermine its government, but the bombings destabilized the Lon Nol government and paved the way for the Khmer Rouge’s killing fields and the massacre of more than a million people.
NBC's sources said that "the potential mission in Mexico is not designed to undermine the Mexican government." But that's what it will do if the US is doing CIA drone strikes on Mexican soil over the objections of the president.

Exactly as @joelhs.bsky.social writes. Also: those flipping out about Zohran Mamdani’s scrapping of Eric Adams’s IHRA & anti-BDS executive orders don’t seem capable of asking themselves why an indicted mayor would issue these particular orders (among others) after being indicted in the first place.
Mamdani rescinded every executive order issued by Eric Adams after Adams's indictment, but still the "New York Times" is focusing exclusively on two of those orders that had to do with Israel.

There is someone singling out Israel here. And it isn't Zohran Mamdani.

So @nytimes.com and @washingtonpost.com abetted a war crime?
🟡 NEW: The New York Times and Washington Post learned of a secret US raid on Venezuela soon before it was scheduled to begin Friday night — but held off publishing what they knew to avoid endangering US troops.

You know which other president fucked up? Obama. By not holding anyone from the Bush admin accountable for lying to the public about Iraq and all the war criming involved. We wouldn’t be where we are with Trump and Venezuela today without that, too.
