In November 1990, LIFE Magazine ran a now-legendary photograph of AIDS activist David Kirby’s last moments. Just out of frame was another eventual victim of AIDS, and the reason Therese Frare was in the room at all; Peta, a two-spirit caretaker with their own story to tell.

angels need to rest again
before their rebirth
Just found out one of my oldest friends died. He was my teacher and buddy and the last words he said to me in person were basically “you’re amazing” and I’ll never forget that

I’ve been thinking all day abt all my dead friends, how many ppl ive lost, how many we collectively lost to AIDS. It’s why it hurts me so much to see so much community infighting bc we’re all we’ve got.

We fight so hard to survive. I don’t understand why we tear each other apart further.

Tomorrow I get to see my pal Steve, a 30-year AIDS survivor, celebrate his being alive with a revue at Urban Stages in NYC. that’s one reason I have this on my mind

Hot take: I don’t believe in monotherapy for trans women. I really think that there’s a lot of power in DHT blockers (specifically in the realm of skin care & mental health) that hasn’t really been broadcast by doctors and clinics in the US, specifically. 1/

I like how women set the rock bottom standards of

1. Doesn't listen to manosphere stuff
2. Owns a bed frame
3. Practices basic hygiene diet and exercise

and men collective could not meet those goals and are calling it the male loneliness epidemic

It troubles me no great end that two of the supposed “tells“ of LLM-assisted writing are lists in threes and the use of the em dash—and those are like literally two things I do all the time. That is just the way I write. what do I have to do, change the way I write?

I just spent the last two hours writing and revising an essay about the through line for a new record. goin thru the songs too & damn, I write about some heavy shit.

So of course what I do after that is fuck around with GarageBand on my phone and write a song that sounds like Waylon Jennings.

My mom keeps sending me anti-mamdani screeds and it’s breaking my heart. Like, she’s entitled to her opinion, but that she doesn’t see the intense Islamophobia embedded under the guise of “he’s bad for the Jews“ makes me, as a Jew, wanna tear my hair out

They hate us because we are living embodiments of possibility.

They hurt us because it’s easy.

We mirror them far too much.

do not let them win.

You know what isn’t developmentally appropriate or healthy for kids? Cancelling SNAP and free school lunches. Letting kids go hungry and malnourished because some want to punish their parents for not making enough money. That is cruelty. That is not funny. 6/

Since full-on leaving spotify and twitter, and only occasionally (like maybe 1x/week) going on insta, my world has become a lot calmer. One of my large anxiety triggers is FOMO or comparing myself to others. It’s been nice to just be a human humaning at home lately or walking the street looking up

The Needle was started 2 months ago because me and @artemis.theneedlenews.com didn't see our interests reflected in the news we were reading.
i'm grateful there's a fervor to launch new projects and publications right now, because the times are as dire as they appear to be, and a generation of young writers is looking out at a landscape that appears to be all ash and dust
