Something clever and whimsical to soothe you: The Dave Brubeck band in 1964 playing a "cover" of Golden Brown - a song that would be written by The Stranglers almost 20 years later. Trust me, it works! www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Qs1...

Great thread here on dispelling the myths around off-shore wind turbines and impact on birds, bats, whales, etc.
And offshore wind has an incredible capacity factor! Largely negating the whole "well, the wind doesn't always blow" angle.

This should make it plain as day that the actual reason there's a campaign against wind energy is fossil fuel interests.
The fight against offshore wind is one of the most insane things I think I've ever seen. Untapped clean energy just blowing around, out in a useless nowhere.

Don't know who to credit with this (and it's not an actual Seinfeld scene so far as I know). But still very relevant today!

Something about TikTok (which I don't use) going dark made me think of the epic first line from William Gibson's Neuromancer:
"The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”

It's blindingly obvious that Trump is running a giant shakedown scheme, and Silicon Valley tech leaders are openly engaging in bribery. Latest one, to his complete shame, is Tim Cook "personally" donating $1m to Trump's inauguration). FFS, he must not have watched the mandatory ethics training video

Government efficiency in action! My wife submitted her passport renewal electronically, in the evening of Dec 23. The passport arrived today via plain old postal mail, Jan 2. That's an incredible 10-day turnaround, including *2* holidays and a weekend! Less than 6 business days including transit.

While I'm doing work on my old car over winter, my phone is littered with photos of engine bay gubbins like this one, that in a couple of weeks I'll completely forget why I took it, and it's kind of meaningless to look at otherwise (as I'm sure you'll agree)

Another project I've wanted to do on my old Lotus Elan is to replace the crapped out parcel shelf (under the rear window). Finished the fabrication of it last night, and have to say I'm really pleased with how it came out!

And "encouraging" here means "huge amounts of planning, effort and spending on infrastructure so that walking, biking and taking trains is convenient, safe and pleasurable."

Encouragement, as in "please don't drive", by itself is going to do very little.
Imagine that, getting cars out of cities and encouraging people to walk, bike, take trains, etc drastically reduces pollution.

A stone cold classic. Not sure when this debuted but it was in early iPod era, so in the naughts.

Remembering F1 legend Colin Chapman, who left us OTD in 1982. Team Lotus, under his direction, won 7 F1 Constructors' titles, 6 Drivers' titles and the Indianapolis 500. The Norfolk team was also often at the forefront of technical development in F1.

Getting ready for a whole bunch of projects - some large, some small - on my old Lotus Elan +2 over the winter. Come the spring it won't look that different outwardly, but lots of changes on the interior and in the engine. Exciting!
