Give me money and I’ll make Corner Smokes - a Native spinoff of Corner Gas where Davis moves to rez to take over his late aunt’s smokeshop. I’m not saying I’ve written the first episode and show bible, but...
I think if Canada wants to have a strong cultural identity we need to go back to doing what we're best at, making the weirdest fucking TV shows you've ever seen

Up in Kitsumkalum today with their nation’s land Guardians, to interview them about their work/shadow them for the day. Also, crossed over into Nisga’a territory to check out their lava beds.

I’ve got an article out in the Star today about the Thomas King issue:

Meanwhile back in the real world... I'm up in Kitsumkalum First Nation tomorrow - the furthest north I've ever been to in Canada. While everyone's been losing their minds about Cowichan getting 5km's of landback, Kitsumkalum just got 500km.

Amazon’s top ten books on First Nations includes 2 residential school denialist books, and 1 book by Thomas King.

I saw Thomas King finally admitted he’s not Native. We were going to do a story on him for the old podcast - he was cited in a court case, his books used in schools - so it mattered. But also it would just be so ugly. This is the best way for him to do it.

The Cowichan hysteria keeps getting dumber. Now cities are coming out to make statements about old land claims - if the news is going to cover it, they should mention it's been on the First Nation's website for nearly a decade. It's not some big secret. 1/2 globalnews.ca/news/1153572...
Kwikwetlem First Nation filed a land claim in 2016 including the Riverview lands | Globalnews.ca
The land in question covers several publicly-owned parcels in Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam, including the Riverview lands, but not private properties.

I got through the 90s without ever having heard the Spice Girls or ever really known who they are. This is how I feel now working at a journalism school, being on BSky and not knowing thing 1 about Olivia Nuzzi. 2/5ths out of touch, 3/5ths thinking maybe I'm better for it.

Agreed on both points. This is a good lesson.
I’m no fan of Elizabeth May but she’s educating us on proposed projects

‘Firing squad execution chamber’ is the NRA’s nickname for elementary schools.
TAKE ACTION! Elevatus Architecture and Okland Construction have been contracted by Idaho to design a new firing squad execution chamber. Help us demand they withdraw from this contract to stop this before it’s built. THREAD

Just saw salmon spawning in this little restored creek behind BCIT - between the Brentwood and Metrotown skylines…

A couple people asked about this Vancouver Sun article whingeing about the word ‘settler’. I wrote a reply on my Substack here: substack.com/@rjjago/note...
Robert Jago (@rjjago)
There was a Vancouver Sun article at the weekend, by Peter McMartin - where he asked how long it will be before he can call himself a ‘Native’ of Canada? He’s upset that terms like ‘Settler’ are used ...

I got a bunch of likes on this old post recently talking about this amazing Canadian artist - Ellen Jewett - apparently she had an auction the other day. Sooo sad I missed it. Her work is #goals to acquire. www.ellenjewettsculpture.com/sculptures

Our beloved Alice Wong has joined the ancestors. It was one of the great honors of my life to call Alice my friend, co-author & co-conspirator. She was a true genius, a force of nature the likes of which the world has never seen before. I love you, Alice, and am equal parts grateful and devastated

Interesting location choice - 2 First Nations just ratified treaties around Terrace. Meaning more than 500km of land back AND economic certainty for business and big nation building projects.

1. never heard of these before. 2. Weird to name a fruit after an ethnicity. 3. Funny to name an *apple* after an Indigenous group. ouch. 4. Of course I bought some.

Also seen at the park - is this wild kingdom stuff or very depressing stuff? Is this the seals playing over their catch... or is that their baby who died and they don't know what to do with it? (1 of 2)

If you're not sure why we need Indigenous Veterans Day as a stand alone day - dig through the old newspaper archives and search for "Indian Veterans". Almost every single story is like these ones, discrimination on top of bureaucratic hell. 1
