You can't fix offsets, because they're not really broken

They are designed from the ground up as a way for polluters to falsify climate action, and for disgustingly rich bankers to divert funds away from frontline communities

As long as fossil fuels exist, offsets will exist

Good paper! -->>>
Are Carbon Offsets Fixable?
This article provides a systematic review of the literature on carbon offsets. A growing number of studies have found that the most widely used offset programs continue to greatly overestimate their p...

#BlocchiamoTutto. Against governments’ silence, against genocide, against impunity.

As workers across Italy call for a #GeneralStrike, CIEL UNITE shows its unwavering solidarity with the #GlobalSumudFlotilla, striking workers in Italy, and all those resisting genocide.

THREAD: 1/5 Another consultation, on proposed changes to the EU #ClimateLaw, closes tomorrow. These changes will:
🙈 open the door to international carbon offsets
🙉 endorse so-called ‘permanent removals’ in the EU carbon market.
Read on to find out what this means 😱

CIEL is proud to stand with the #KickBigPollutersOut coalition as the #UNFCCC takes a critical step: forcing all COP30 participants to publicly disclose their funders and affirm alignment with the Paris Agreement.

Today the Commission closes its consultation on ‘CO2 infrastructure & markets’ – a fossil fuel industry stitch up full of deregulation that seeks to entrench carbon capture by building costly and dangerous CO2 pipelines.

Thanks to @aleddilwyn.bsky.social for the analysis of the DNV report used above.
Finally, that headline: 4x #CCS growth in next 5 years.

Unbelievable growth for a proven to fail technology.

The DNV report shows
❌In the 10 years between 2012 & 2022 CCS capacity didn't even double
❌CCS failure rates are growing, not falling
❌Capture rates only reach c. 60%
Oxy is proposing to use the majority of the CO2 captured from Stratos for oil extraction. You can read more on DAC and Stratos in this briefing from @ciel.org

www.ciel.org/wp-content/u...
www.ciel.org
Away from DNV's report, WEF mention the oil company OXY-owned Stratos Direct Air Capture project. OXY's CEO makes it very clear DAC is a way to keep oil flowing, saying in Mar 2023: "[DAC] gives our industry a license to continue to operate for the [next] 60, 70, 80 years.”
The article states "CCS is critical to the energy transition."

With the vast majority (85% according to
DNV) of current #CCS capacity being used for Enhanced Oil Recovery (ie producing more oil) the emphasis is clearly on prolonging the current fossil fuel energy.
WEF highlight #CCS for decarbonising cement, steel & chemical sectors. But fossil fuel production/use makes up 2/3s of CCS capacity by 2030 in the DNV predictions. CCS in gas processing doubles

“hydrocarbon production drives uptake” not decarbonising hard to abate industry
This piece by the World Economic Forum repeats wildly optimistic headlines about #CCS from a DNV Group report... but underplays the failings of #CCS (many of which are also in the report) and its use to prolong fossil fuels. I’ll unpack below 👇

Carbon capture and storage is at a turning point. Here's why
Carbon capture and storage is forecast to grow fourfold to 2030, and technological advances and government approval will be key to scaling it further.

Mozambique LNG is a known site of environmental and human rights violations – and the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM) approved billions of tax dollars to fund this project without proper environmental review, economic assessments, or public input.

We're taking them to court.

Wasting time & public 💰 on risky, expensive technical fixes such as #CCS and #CDR delays just transition + gives the industry cover to keep up emissions, says Oil Change International senior campaigner Myriam Douo, commenting on the EU's updated climate law.

15 degrees above average, Brussels, Northern Europe

now, the fact that I'm Mediterranean and used to high(er) temperatures didn't make me blind to the fact that we were stepping into a furnace

it'll keep happening if we don't start taking serious action NOW

🚨CIEL sounds the alarm: New #EUClimateLaw’s 90% target is climate action in name only. It leans on #FalseSolutions including international offsets, which lets polluters evade responsibility.

You can’t offset your way to a livable future!
