I got to learn and try so many new things while in the office. I met so many amazing, insightful journalists and editors, people with a passion for their community. I am so lucky to have been mentored by them and grateful for all I have experienced in my time there.

People spend a lot of time wondering why the left is worse at using independent media to control the national narrative.

A useful exercise is to ask why the left is also worse at selling snake oil and pyramid schemes, because I think the reasons are basically exactly the same.

Publishing looks glossy from the outside. Inside? It’s built on unpaid labour.

My first book is out this year.
Here’s what I actually got paid, what my contract says, & why most authors can’t afford to do this twice.

Published Doesn’t Mean Paid.
I want to talk about money. (Ugh, I know. How crass.) Specifically, how much money authors make, or more accurately, don’t. I signed my publishing deal in 2023. My advance was £2,500. That’s it. I w...

New piece with Mission Local! In my humble opinion it's a cool looking one

It's a new term, a new Board of Supervisors, & all 11 have got plans & goals for the coming years.

Most San Franciscans don't know much about their local electeds—so we put pencil to paper, illustrating a bit about their backgrounds & promises.

Mayor Daniel Lurie has made downtown recovery a top priority, but a key part of that is missing: Maintaining fully-serviced public transit.

With a $15M budget shortfall, Lurie's team appears resigned to Muni service cuts this summer.

Speaking of comics:

Whether this new administration “observes” it or not, it’s still Black History Month.

I recently landed back in California to start my comics journalism internship. Very excited! Very turbulent time in news to start reporting, but is it not always? This short comic I made a while ago about how media algorithms can tunnel into negativity feels as relevant as now as ever.
Kait is taking a jog in a public park, listening to something on her phone with a smile. She gets distracted by her phone and sits down on a bench, trying to block media.

Text:

Kait has been getting into running again. It's pretty cool how her phone knows, and how social media sends related content her way!

But now it's turned from running shoe reviews and workout schedules, to content about fixation on weight loss and excessive eating restriction. Symptoms of anorexia.

Kait didn't like how personal and extreme this content got, but she couldn't figure out how to get her social media to stop tracking her. Social media being free means her personal data is the product. There is no way to turn it off. Kait looks at her phone frustrated. A whirlpool of negative media swirls around her as the world turns dark, until she shuts off her phone. Kait keeps running, but not with a smile anymore.

Text:

Okay so she can't turn it off, but why did she get anorexia content? Social media's goal is to keep her online longer, and to get more information from Kait.

Nothing gets more interaction than provocative content. Because of how these algorithms learn, they tend to promote emotionally charged materials. This pushes anti-vax, self harm, terrorist and alt-right content to the forefront, and research indicates it's a contributing factor to how polarized politics are today.

This is a huge, unregulated power for tech companies to have. Currently there is no regulation for transparency in how these algorithms are built. These tech giants profiting from harmful content need to take responsibility, and users need agency over their own content.

Learn what needs to change.
