Since there has been a lot of "what are Americans even doing" talk on the timeline today, my gentle reminder that none of you better be posting the exact details of what you are doing on bluesky dot com, it is more important to safely do the work than prove to strangers that you are doing something!

WH sources say Venezuela's opposition leader committed the "ultimate sin": She accepted the Nobel Peace prize.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one said.

Yeah, people are fixating on a Cabinet Secretary being given a sovereign country to run because the president waged war without congressional approval and kidnapped the old leader. Weird that they’d get hung up on that.
WELKER: Mr. Secretary, are you running Venezuela right now?

MARCO RUBIO: Yeah. People are fixating on that. Here's the bottom line -- we expect to see changes in Venezuela

My younger nephew's third birthday was Saturday; the older one is five. My dad (who my sister & I are both estranged from) dropped off presents for both. The five-year-old got a remote-control lizard. The birthday boy got what Dad clearly didn't realize was a cat toy. At least he remembered?

LIFE IS DANCING 😭😭😭
In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

Let me just say: Fuckers.
Just now, a national trans healthcare felony ban for youth has passed the US House, with 10 year prison terms.

3 Dems crossed party lines to vote to jail providers.

4 GOP crossed party lines to vote against.

It is not expected to pass the Senate, where Dems hold filibuster power.

Story to come.

Measles didn’t make a comeback on its own.

This is RFK Jr’s anti-vax movement and his disinformation campaign. And equally as disturbing, some people are perfectly fine with this outcome.

I can’t believe how much of the Trump era is about solving problems that *don’t* exist while making all the problems that *do* exist, worse.

There is no one who thinks the biggest problem with air travel right now is not having an area to do pull-ups.
Duffy on what he's doing to improve the airport experience for travelers: "Maybe I want a workout area where people might get some blood flowing doing some pull ups or step ups in the airport."

Staff at Alice Deal Middle School made the decision this year to remove all full-length novels from the 8th grade curriculum.

It's a mistake, current parent @aaronweso.bsky.social writes, arguing that "reading full novels has real and important benefits for middle school-age children and in life."
Opinion: DCPS middle-schoolers should be reading novels
Many parents like myself were shocked by a recent change to the English curriculum at Alice Deal Middle School.

This makes perfect sense to me and I've often wondered how, say, lawyers who use AI to write briefs expect to effectively argue their positions in court.
“When participants used ChatGPT to draft essays, brain scans revealed a 47% drop in neural connectivity across regions associated with memory, language, & critical reasoning.

Their brains worked less, but they felt just as engaged—a kind of metacognitive mirage.”🧪

When Biden gave the worst debate performance in history, my job as a neutral reporter was to write about it incessantly until he dropped out. When Trump gave the second worst debate performance in history, against Harris, my job was to lend credence to his claim that immigrants were eating pets.

This is such a compassionate & thoughtful thread. I quit teaching—something I genuinely love doing—in 2022 for several burnout-inducing reasons, but the constantly compounding nightmare I see former colleagues enduring is so much worse.
I have been reading all the "students these days" threads from various sides and I have an essay's worth of thoughts -- there's a lot of complexity and heterogeneity that is hard to communicate on social media. There are a couple of things I will say here though. 1/

Rabbiatu is a nurse who worked during COVID, had been in the U.S. 30 years. A judge ordered that she could not be sent back to Sierra Leone for her safety, for fear of torture (!). So our evil regime sent her to Ghana (in shackles), and Ghana dragged her back to Sierra Leone.
🧵This 58-year-old nurse from Maryland is seen being violently dragged along the ground by officials in Ghana.

Trump deported her there.

This abhorrent & disgusting abuse of a woman who saved American lives and cared for injured and ill Americans for 30 years.

All the details below are worse.

Rabbiatu Kuyateh was detained this summer at her annual ICE check-in, her son said. She moved to the D.C. area 30 years ago as she fled civil war in Sierra Leone.
