Happy "Thames Goes Colour Today in 1969" day to all who celebrate. Here's the postage-stamp sized sticker they put on their outgoing mail in the month or so before C-Day.

The very last thing my veteran husband did on the day he died was replace the torn flying flag at his company. No one asked him to do it. He bought the flag himself. He didn't even tell me he was doing it. He did it for the sole purpose of love for his country and his flag.

If this picture was of Obama, you know @FoxNews would do three weeks solid on why the flag was on the ground.

At least three weeks

i just read something about grief from C.S. Lewis and his book, “A Grief Observed”

basically, when someone you love dies, it isn’t just them that you miss, but the parts of yourself that person brought out of you that can never be brought out again.

i feel that with my dad.

Without asylum:

Marks and Spencer wouldn't exist

Queen would have been without a front man

The other queen wouldn't have had a husband

Judith Kerr would never have written The Tiger Who Came to Tea

And thousands of less famous people wouldn't have been teachers, politicians, neighbours, etc

That final point is absolutely crucial.
The fact that the BBC has made serious culpable errors does not negate the point that there is a real and concerted right-wing media campaign to destroy it. Both points can be true at the same time and the campaign would not end even if the errors did.

One of my favourite pictures. It was complete serendipity. I was taking a picture of this field of glass poppies installation at the Tower of London many years ago, when one of the Tower's Beefeaters walked by, stopped, and adjusted one. It was such a simple, touching gesture that spoke volumes.
