Last Rites

I did this one last month, not much art since then unfortunately
Drawn in deep red ink, a robed skeleton with antlers and a spectral crown kneels holding a dead rabbit. He is surrounded by about a dozen rabbits looking on in apparent mourning, in the overgrowth of a garden. In the background there is a brick wall and lurking in the shadows and tangle of brush are foxes looking on.

My tiny elderly mother's favorite.
The words, "Everyone talks about Tom Cruise doing all his own stunts, but no one talks about Margaret Rutherford taking fencing lessons so she could do ever shot of the sword fight at the end of Murder Ahoy herself without a stunt double. Also, she was 72." This, over two black and white pictures of Ms. Rutherford, the one on the left is her with a sword, presumably from Murder Ahoy which I've never seen, and the one on the right looks posed, but she seems to be about to bean someone on the head with a cylindrical thingamabob. In expressive close up.

I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows. I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

I wrote this poem as an homage to Baldwin and to hear it being sung across the world or read in protests has been my own guiding light of hope.

Every home turned to rubble is the home I grew up in. Every brother carrying the remains of his brother across borders is my brother. Every sister waiting for a sister who will never come home is my sister. Every one of these people are ours, Just like we are theirs. We belong to them and they belong to us.
