Today is Candlemas

If you have not cleared all your Christmas decorations by today, a demon hiding behind them will cause dire mischief in your house for the rest of the year.

I don't often post about church stuff here, but goodness only knows we all need to light candles against the darkness right now. This beautiful choral service is one of my favourites: looking back to Christmas and forwards to Lent and Easter. If you happen to be in Bath tomorrow you'd be v. welcome.

The scales are kind of lovely, but really sorry this is what you're having to do @intheflowerbeds.bsky.social (and others who responded on this thread).

I'm in the planning stages of a project to gather the experiences of patients *during* their antidepressant reduction to better understand [cont]
I got myself some drug dealer scales for venlafaxine reduction, and it's a thing of beauty!

It comes back to the @bengoldacre.bsky.social quote that I think of so often: "I think you'll find it's a little bit more complicated than that". In my experience working in healthcare, many people were looking for quick and simple fixes that just didn't exist. We should be more honest about that.
If we want healthcare to be more:

Compassionate
Collaborative
Trauma informed
Kind
Holistic
(the list goes on)

The solution ISN'T getting everyone to sit through a training session. It just isn't.

We need to invest in workplace conditions & infrastructure that routinely support how we want to be.

There should be a one-month moratorium on new work. Just give everyone the month of February to do the things they are already doing. Nothing new. No additional projects. No new initiatives. No requests. Any email asking someone to do something is automatically rejected and replaced with a cat gif.

My copy of this print by @robinfinnart.bsky.social was a brilliant conversation starter at the @bristolhealthp.bsky.social event I attended today (I was chatting about research ideas relevant to people taking psych meds)

Thanks to @luckyerica3.bsky.social who shared it so it appeared on my feed.

Like so many people I'm increasingly anxious about Reform.

I see posts basically saying why you'd have to be stupid to vote for them, what idiots they are, mocking people.

This makes me more anxious tbh. It was the same approach with brexit, with Tr*mp. It doesnt work, it just strengthens support.

There is video of the shooting of a woman by ICE in Minneapolis circulating that shows an ICE agent repeatedly shooting her at point blank range while she tries to drive off. There was no obvious threat to any ICE agent.

Ridiculously pleased with my rocky road Christmas pudding, made to share at my parents' Christmas gathering today #PharmFoods

I also feel very lucky to be able to share time with my mum, dad, sisters, brother-in-law and nephews (as well as my own lovely husband and kids of course)

In answer to @charliepsych.bsky.social's question about what gets in the way of true patient centred care, I think Paul makes a great point. There is always a balance between what the system can accommodate and what an individual patient may ask for, but too often we let the system win out (cont.)
A third blind spot is fitting care into what's convenient for the clinician. E.g. the harm caused by abrupt interruptions to established analgesia at admission to hospital. "Yes, I did tell them! But they said they didn't have any/couldn't prescribe it/had wrong colour socks/other excuse"

Just a few more days for UK #pharmacists to complete the survey to tell us what they think about #AdvancedPractice credentialing.

We've had a great response but would love to hear from more people in community and primary care and more early-career pharmacists. Make your views heard!

Happy #AdvancingPractice2025 week.

It's the perfect time to launch the survey by my MPharm4 project students. They're investigating factors that help and hinder pharmacists to achieve #AdvancedPractice recognition.

Singing in a church choir is an important part of my life outside my work. I also love the season of Advent with it's acknowledgement of darkness, uncertainty and waiting. I thought I'd share some pieces of music that resonate with me during this time of year. A moment to pause.

In my view, this cuts to the heart of many of the problems with how the NHS now runs. Benefits of continuity of care are hard to prove in research studies (although I know there are some) but not everything important can be easily measured.
When you're living with a chronic condition, continuity of care helps to contain anxiety- when you know there'll be a reassuring response in the event of inevitable flare ups. The ongoing relationship IS the intervention.

Services can't offer this anymore, & there's increased anxiety throughout.

#PharmSky UK pharmacists pls consider taking part in this survey on #AdvancedPractice

You'd be supporting my MPharm4 students and increasing understanding of an important topic.

Could opinion leaders like @pharmrj.pharmsky.app @hpillminster.pharmsky.app and @pharmacistdaz.uk help spread the word?

I don't know that she is more powerful, but she has a power he does not have.

I adore Mike and Alison as a couple in BBC Ghosts. So loving, supportive and real. And I think it is abundantly clear he adores her. 💕
