Sociopolitical malcontent. Chinese lit sometimes. 我的名字是一个问号。
I don't think Lizza and Nuzzi are going to get *rich* off of this tbh.

There's not much you can say about Liu that "a professor who published an anti–PMC book w a university press" doesn't say already.
Catherine Liu is an interesting leftist prof but she uses the word retard as if that's transgressive against language police, & I can't take her seriously now.

Talk to anyone with an intellectually disabled relative & you'll find it's not virtue signalling, it's visceral. Mocking disability? Cold.

Again, we have created Axël from Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's play "Don't Create the Axël"

"Stealing ebooks is leftism" is a subset of the grand category of things that annoys me the most about contemporary internet discourse: nobody can just do a bad thing, everything they do must be morally justified, in fact, actively good.

you just can't have a meaningful conversation about the potential benefits of "AI" while this stuff is happening. it's like trying to talk about how useful an airplane might be during a hijacking

I found this interview with Moishe Indig illuminating, or, at the very least, incredibly fun: mishpacha.com/the-kingmake...

Trivia aside, Blossoms Shanghai seems...more Chinese TV than Wong Kar-wai, but it's a compelling enough watch imo

Original Mu Xin essay: 真正上海人,就大有讲究,一“牌头”、二“派头”、三“噱头”

Blossoms Shanghai: In Shanghai, business is all about access, style, and theater

My crack at it: If you wanted to become a True Shanghainese, you had to really pay attention to, first, pull, badeu; second, style, phadeu; third, shtick, shiuh

Some in-the-weeds stuff about Blossoms Shanghai: I was commissioned to translate the Mu Xin essay the suiting scene in the first episode basically cribs from verbatim. It's extremely hard to translate all the specialty foreign fabrics. Blossoms gets around this by...cutting it out most of them, lol.

The Gaza protests not only “provoked intense political conflict.” Liberal and Dem leaders are still calling them antisemites for caring about liberal principles like human rights and international law…and they expect these same kids to come defend liberal democracy!

Really wish the English subtitles for Blossoms indicated when they are speaking Mandarin and when they are speaking Shanghainese!

Sry that makes perfect sense to me, ecologically speaking the Pacific Northwest could easily support a large hominid, but you want me to believe there's one stomping about above the tree line? Please be serious.

It’s very funny how Anglo center left parties are the parties of stuck up technocratic elites when they never actually consult subject matter experts, rather law school professors and consultants

Probably all jobs are like this, but academia is great at having a million little annoying tasks that get between you and the substantive work you need to do

One of the things I really despise about Eric Adams is that he's one of those people who constantly runs his mouth about working hard and is in fact extremely lazy

I find it darkly comic when people get very mad about Zohran's nuanced statement on the protests outside Park East and then suddenly become very sensitive to nuance when talking about what exactly Nefesh b'Nefesh does with re: West Bank settlements.
