this position is a fascist one actually
“Why are folks getting dumber?” Because they don’t read. “Why aren’t men as romantic & poetic as they used to be?” Because they don’t read. “Why are people so vulnerable to propaganda?” “Why is everyone a conspiracy theorist?” Because they don’t read. Because they don’t read.

It’s simple. 60% the values need to stay exactly where they are or it will explode after 3 steps, 30% have problem specific ranges you tune by hand, and 20% need to be changed to something found in appendix Tau of a paper with 3 citations from 2014.

I think one of the biggest issues with how much is happening and how fast its happening is that there are so many small things flying under the radar which are just as bleak for the future, like the bizarre normalisation of prediction markets

"professional development" goal setting is sooo much less annoying when you're not an hourly employee who only gets paid for client billable hours

"the optimal level of fraud is not zero" is, I think, really the answer here. it's not also politically correct to say since Americans hate any kind of cheating, no matter how minor it is
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

it really is just kind of funny how bad romantasy has its roots in harry potter culture. one conservative industry plant author annihilated modern english popular literary culture forever and turned it ontologically into american fast food

not the main point but the tackiness of everything visible in their webcams..
I didn't realize that the pro-eugenics natalist couple that was inexplicably profiled by several major outlets for having a lot of kids through IVF started a podcast. Here's an unlistenable episode where they try and argue that Hitler was a hipster and not "right wing."

fuck it, for the people in the back:

the jeff bezos owned washington post is the outlet responsible for making sure the primary complaint about AI was water. this may have been in part because jeff knew it was bullshit, so when amzn gets blowback they can easily prove their water footprint is small
not to be conspiratorial but the outlet that successfully pushed this line and made it the primary complaint was wapo

It sucks that professors will have to AI-proof their courses in order to preserve the value of education, but man, someone has to. At this point, it would be nice to see governments actually try to make protecting education easier
Yes, in my classes I've shifted a lot to in-class writing (critical analyses, tests). The one 'take home' assignment I kept is the traditional research paper, but with added elements (including documenting step-by-step how research sources were found) to try to mitigate AI use.
My presumption has been this will all mean a shift to doing everything live (no take home). Is that happening? Impossible?

*graduate student but otherwise THIS
There is a well coordinated national campaign targeting a single trans professor at Oklahoma University to get her fired. It's part of a broader campaign to push trans people out of public life entirely. It was never about sports.

not victim blaming BUT if you are a trans person and find yourself grading a blatantly transphobic essay submission it's in your best interest to grade under a rubric as objective as possible. may not save you! but it also might!
