Big props to the CDPH-VR for countering the GOP's whole "Democrats have shut down the government" bullshit.
Meanwhile, I'm enjoying watching the progress of the paperwork I mailed on Friday to the California Department of Public Health – Vital Records (CDPH-VR) to update my birth certificate.

I always like it in shows and movies when vampires, who were by definition once human, talk about humans as a completely different and inexplicable species. Being a trans woman and thus AMAB, men feel like a completely different and inexplicable species to me. They make no goddamn sense whatsoever.
i actually don’t think the “average” american millennial man had a nazi phase. it’s not some boys will be boys shit. this makes me side eye you and your friend group, sounds like a personal problem
They were nonfiction history books about Nazi officials written by her cishet male boyfriend, but since the books were not pro-Nazi, she figured that made it okay and that there was nothing offensive about these symbols of antisemitism and the Holocaust and white supremacy and pure fucking evil.
One of the last things I saw on my abusive partner Cally's FB page before she blocked me in 2021 (for writing a memoir which told the truth about our relationship) was her complaining that FB had removed pictures of her bookshelf due to it including books with visible swastikas on the spines.

It is hard to put into words how angry and sad this makes me feel. This asshole is destroying our nation and NONE of the cowards who are supposed to care about this are doing anything to stop him.
NEW: After The Washington Post reported Monday on the demolition of the "East Wing facade," a new picture obtained by Law Dork that was taken on Tuesday shows that a substantial portion of the entirety of the East Wing has been demolished.

Do yourself a favor and take a minute to watch this animated short about 9yo Ronald McNair visiting his home town’s segregated library. It was produced by Story Corps and narrated by McNair's older brother Carl.

Near the end, Carl talks about the impact that "Star Trek" had on his brother. 🧪 🔭

"San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie didn't refer to Trump by name in the statement."

*cough*coward*cough*
Toledo Blade, October 21, 1977. THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and to a lesser extent ERASERHEAD tend to be thought of as quintessential midnight movies, but they tried it with everything in the late 1970s--including Richard Brooks' LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR, which doesn't *not* make sense.

"I'm not anti-trans but I have legitimate concerns for women's safety" will not fly with me any more than a sentence beginning with "I'm not racist but"
Daily Variety, October 21, 1963. The comedy team of Mitzi McCall & Charlie Brill, a scant four months before their career was annihilated by the Beatles on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW. Hey there, Arne Darvin!

This might be the most hipster-ish thing I’ve ever said, and heaven knows there’s a lot of competition for that title: I first heard “Black Diamond” on the Replacements album Let It Be, and was very surprised to later discover it was a KISS cover.
How YouTube Music (or LyricFind, I suppose) represents the wordless vocals during the guitar solo of Heart’s “Magic Man.”
Oh, and according to the credits, Eleniak's character's name is "Pretty Girl." Cool!
Drew Barrymore as Elliot's younger sister Gertie is the film's saving grace, but Spielberg's "girls are icky" ethos comes through with Erika Eleniak as a girl coded as crushed out on Elliot who looks like a slightly older version of Gertie, and who Elliot kisses in a chaos sequence. It's...weird.
I do not deny that it's very well-made, being prime-era Spielberg, but it's a "boy and his dog" story, and those historically do not interest me. I don't like spending time with immature boys, which is why Spielberg's HOOK is also so off-putting to me. And fucking READY PLAYER ONE, for that matter.
I have not watched Spielberg's E.T. all the way through since I saw it in the theater in 1982 when I was nine, and I did not like it then. 2017 was the last time I attempted to watch the whole thing, with no success; I'm about halfway through in this attempt, and oof, it is just not for me.
One of the legit funniest things I've ever heard was Fey's description in the Bossypants audiobook of her iPod repeatedly playing "We'd Like To Thank You Herbert Hoover" from Annie during what was supposed to be a glamourous photo shoot.
Bossypants was the first memoir I ever listened to as an audiobook. And while the book itself is a perfect blend of humor, sap, and social commentary, Fey's delivery takes it over the top.

(And since Fey is also from the Philly suburbs, it's the right accent, too).
repeat: "effeminate mountain man"
Cleveland Press, October 20, 1956.

Marietta College students think the Elvis Presley rage only enrages. In a poll conducted by the student newspaper, 74% of the ballots were against the singer.

Campus critics called him "a hopped-up kid," "effeminate mountain man," "demented youth" and "a slob."
Los Angeles Evening Citizen News, October 20, 1956.

"Who is Elvis Presley anyway? These girls give him more importance and than any popular singer should have.

Let's be sensible. He's a boy who made good. More power to him, but not like that!"

I can't really explain fully why this is the thing of all things that got my jaw on the floor but I guess it's such a literal symbol and also such a jaw dropping amount of money while small businesses are struggling to survive the tariffs

Such a visible "go fuck yourself"

The tricky part is that most of the tutorials are by men who I do not care to spend time with. It's like, even though Sybok is my favorite antagonist from the original Star Trek movies--with Kruge coming in second, obvs.--I really don't need him glaring at me and telling me I'm doing things wrong.
