When I think of all the incredibly talented, hardworking, and decent people I know who have had to leave academia for reasons they have no control over, and see shite like this, it does lean me towards the belief that huge chunks of academia are irredeemable.

he’s stepping back from all public commitments in light of his messages with Epstein, saying he is “deeply ashamed” and hopes “to rebuild trust and repair relationships.”

Being on the direct receiving end of lobbying of all kinds now, one of my most consistent observations is how the same people can change the way they talk about how the “free market” should be intervened with when it “free markets” too good.
A federal program that deported 400,000 immigrants from 2008-2014 increased new-construction home prices by 16%, or $50k. This is net of reduced demand effects.

Here's a thread with an annual reminder that VicPD is overfunded and overstaffed. VicPD likes to say it's a special exception as a "downtown" police force, but they cost more per capita than every other department in B.C., including Vancouver. #yyj 🧵
