Instead of regurgitating the bromide that LLMs are just "autocomplete on steroids" (even by people who know better), maybe we can actually engage in some public education. The problem with genAI is better expressed through a classic computer science concept, known as SYMBOL GROUNDING. 🧵

Curious about what I work on?

I made a poster for my dissertation, its scope, dataset, methodology, and preliminary results. See how I investigate economic and legal institutions from 2000 BCE:

Starting in less than an hour. Grab a sandwich, get comfy, and come join us worry out loud about possible futures for the academy and the historical record. Except Sayeed. Sayeed is super optimistic. 😀

If you're still shopping for a noon Thursday thing, zoom on right in for "AI, Data and Ownership Roundtable" with Kim, Nadejda, and Sayeed. Funnny thing is this started as a conversation on a zoom, and we were like "we should now do it in public."

Given current events, this seems to be the right time for us, Pelagios, to be joining bluer skies. Who are we? We are a free and open association of equal and interdependent Partners from the digital humanities, GLAM sector, and data science field, working to make linking data online really easy.

Oh!! Maybe its from the movie 300!!! The Persian king has several nose rings
shgordin.bsky.social
The model has definitely hallucinated this from somewhere…maybe from a different culture?
shgordin.bsky.social
So was it nosering?? There is I believe somewhere a reference to this in a popular history book, I can’t recall which…

They made me do video 😬 but for a good reason!

We are launching an iOS app–it runs OLMoE locally 📱 We're gonna see more on-device AI in 2025, and wanted to offer a simple way to prototype with it

App: apps.apple.com/us/app/ai2-o...
Code: github.com/allenai/OLMo...

We took our most efficient model and made an open-source iOS app📱but why?

As phones get faster, more AI will happen on device. With OLMoE, researchers, developers, and users can get a feel for this future: fully private LLMs, available anytime.

Ok we're doing this! Here's a google form to gauge interest in what we're tentatively calling Snack-Sized Digital Pedagogy. More info in thread. The bite-sized version -> short lightning talk on a pedagogical thing followed by discussion w/ mini web publication to follow.
