This is giving me really bad feels - it strongly gives the impression that she embraced the conspiracies and is “trying to dismantle the MOF cult”

This will not end well.

If it were to happen (I sincerely do not think it would do any good), I also very much doubt the CDPJ would win that many seats as some estimates suggest - the last upper house election was terrible for them as well.
The far right celebrated they won votes while CDPJ-like moderates were stagnant.

I would not write off a snap election after all - regardless of how destructive it would be for the LDP - since Takaichi and Aso (mostly the latter) are pros in the school of hubris

In a free edition of the Japan Daily Briefing — I’m starting “free Fridays” — I look more at the causes and effects of Kōmeitō’s break with the LDP and discuss Ishiba’s reflections on the eightieth anniversary of the end of World War II.

Japan, ostensibly one of the least religious countries in the world, had its political order upended by the lay Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai. That is THE story about Friday's epochal shift in Japanese politics (thread follows):

Seriously, is Hagiuda such an irreplaceable genius that risking the breakdown of the coalition was deemed a worthy risk?

It is baffling that what brought down the coalition was reportedly not the hyper-conservative stances Takaichi took throughout her career, it was the insistence on a bad political donations legislation and on reinstating someone who was suspended due to *you guessed it* a faction funding scandal.

“Sankei, meaningful[ly], is suggesting that it may be better for the LDP and Kōmeitō to separate.”

Not surprised that the Fox News of Japan wants the party that moderated LDP stances to leave government.

In a new Japan Daily Briefing, Komeito debates breaking the coalition ahead of a meeting of party leaders Friday, Takaichi tries to salvage it, and the CDP continues to try to organize an alternative coalition to prevent a Takaichi premiership.

If you missed it yesterday, here’s the link to my discussion with @victordcha.bsky.social and @tobiasharris.bsky.social on the implications of Takaichi’s LDP leadership victory for Japan, East Asia and the US, on @csis.org’s Impossible State. Really enjoyed our chat.

Tensions between the LDP and Komeito have been building over recent years, but Japan's ruling coalition has hit a crucial stage. The combo of Takaichi at the helm, plummeting election results for Komeito, a Soka Gakkai base that's facing its own existential crises after Ikeda Daisaku...a new era.

This is not a sarcastic take btw, just stating a fact.

(And a reminder: the mentality that “Russia=bad” is nonsensical and you should broaden your horizons)
