Here's my story on JD Gunn, a Panamanian-American who is making a push for a (soccer) World Cup spot less than a decade after playing for a (basketball) continential title.

Crystal Dunn is one of the most versatile players in American soccer history. Her career will, and should, be remembered as such.

Her retirement at 33 should also serve as a reminder of those who failed her.

To celebrate ex-USWNT Crystal Dunn’s career is to also acknowledge how others failed her
The midfielder's impact on the sport extends far beyond her versatility.

Apologies to @pkedit.bsky.social for copying his post from another site that I would leave if I could. But what he wrote is true:

No newspaper in the United States has covered soccer more and better in its history than the Washington Post. It saw demand and interest decades ago, and answered.

When I started covering DC United in 2011, coverage was robust - MLS had its own beat writer (my dear friend @cboehm.bsky.social), I provided granular coverage for DCist, Black & Red United went further - and Goff, a real legend, covered the club like a big league team.

They now have no coverage.
the entire WaPo situation is obviously terrible but from a soccer angle, it's hard to imagine the paper will cover the Spirit/DCU much, if at all anymore. that is an enormous loss for soccer fans in the region and really, to those teams as well.

RIP to the Washington Post sports page.

Among many other things, it's always been invaluable to my research & writing on soccer history. So much of the writing - like this John Feinstein piece from 1980 - is so rich & colorful, just entirely alien compared to what you see today.

Club has been public that Lozano is not part of the plans this year. No departure sorted yet for the club’s highest-paid player but they begin season without him

All the smart newspaper execs left for real jobs that pay better a long time ago. Unlike the actual act of journalism, there’s nothing fulfilling in it. All that’s left is people who suck. If they ran a funeral parlor, no one would die.

“We are irritated by the behavior of New York City FC. The contracts were not only negotiated but already signed.”

No comment from NYCFC.
