I've been a proponent of this idea, myself, but it did get a small asterisk for me last year. Dandadan S2 got a bunch of Gundam references, which I did recognize... but they simply don't have any well-established RU translations to reference. I might as well have tl'd them from scratch.
this morning i am reminded that if you have *any* hopes of doing localization from JP to any language you absolutely need to have watched Gundam because all works will inevitably throw in a Gundam reference or two without even gesturing at it

Translation pet peeve of the day: treating 好評 as anything but boilerplate text that it is. There is no meaningful difference between 発売中 and 好評発売中 other than "Raving reviews" sounding clunky.

I haven't really had any "the year in retrospect" posts but if I had to name a single personal discovery of the 2025, it would be Band-Maid. What an absolute unit of a band, feels like I'm listening to them non-stop and still haven't grown tired. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LB_...

I would say something smarmy about the parallels between Russia and America, but at the end of the day, I would much rather see people forgive the common citizen rather than blaming them in both cases. Just keep it in mind when you assume some nation to be "all bad" or "irredeemable".

I remember some Japanese tweet talking about Avesta along the lines of "I asked people why they wouldn't read it, and they said it starts with a fetus killing its mother and I went "oh right".

It's been one of those days when it feels like even my closest friends are bigoted beyond repair, so I have no choice but to grit my teeth and tough it out, because it's simply too late to break this relationship. It is imperative to have "a good screen" you relax at and "a bad screen" you do all your work on, and they should never be mixed up.
To my fellow translators: what do you wish someone had taught you about translation (whether the act or translation or having a freelance job) that you had to learn by yourself?
