Jin can't see it that way, though. To him, the world is nothing more than ideals. Ideals which dictate reasons for violence, because there is no conclusion which does not end in someone suffering. His war is all for the purpose of killing, and he can never see the value in a single life.

Small bit, but shout-out for Raito to be the only authority here to call out unloading violent force on student protesters.

Man might be a servant of the state, but he's not a fascist.

Concrete Revolutio is a story about the meaning of justice and heroism in an ideal-less world riddled with contradictions.

It also has images like this.

And yet, as we see here, Kikko's demonic self doesn't actually discard her convictions. Rather, what is absent is, as with Claude against Jiro, her kind heart. The thing which she demonstrated time and time again to be the biggest strength she has.

They are justice without humanity.

And that comes out in the big gut-punch - the moment when Jiro's own contradictory mission statement leads to him inadvertently saying that Kikko is someone he wouldn't protect.

Kikko, the girl who loves Jiro for his noble heart, and is terrified that she is a monster, doesn't take it well.

When Hyouma tells Fuurouta that he "hates kids", the audience is initially meant to assume he means Jiro. But in truth, he's referring to himself.

He is a man atoning for the evil he had committed while play-acting as an "adult", the he who had convinced himself that killing was grown-up.

And so we see the character of Hyouma Yoshimura.

A man who will do whatever it takes to bring about a better world.

Even if it means killing the very person he used to be.

As with the other main characters, Hyouma's core is in how he relates to Jiro. Though they seem like complete opposites, the true difference is in how Jiro represents the idealism Hyouma tried to discard. And in turn, despite seemingly resenting him, Jiro respects him deeply for what he's done.

One of the interesting details of this one is how they recontextualize Hyouma specifically as a person. Whilst previously his more authoritarian clashing with Jiro almost made him out as an antagonist, this instead reveals it as his redemption. A man struggling to rediscover pure ideals.

I'll say it as many times as I need to - Fantastic as this series is as fiction, it is also an *incredible* source for out-of-context shitposts.

So, to recap, Hyouma Yoshimura is:

- A time-traveller.
- A former fascist assassin.
- A furry.

This man really has it all.

Continuing the thematic bases, Hyouma seems specifically drawn from the hard-boiled seinen manga of the gekiga movement. In contrast to the "childish" bases of Jiro/Kikko/Fuurouta, he is an "adult", a man who does what he is told because that is how the world works. That he smokes completes this.

It's really striking how this love triangle has been wrapped into the thematic dichotomy of the series. Emi and Kikko demonstrate the two paths Jiro can take: Either an unfeeling enforcer of justice by the state, or someone who fights in kindness regardless of the controdictions.

Concrete Revolutio is an immensely complex and narratively rich work exploring the concepts of justice, heroism, and ideals, set in a politically-charged and lore-rich setting that acts as a tribute to foundational works of Japanese art.

It also has lines like this:

This is another thing alluded to prior, but here we get to really see first-hand just how disillusioned Jiro has become with the Bureau's mission, along with how Hyouma treats him now that he's defected. Unlike with Kikko and Fuurouta, it's clear there's no love lost here.

God, you can really feel the passion into every character of this series. Even the sight of this asshole kids hanging around a schoolyard together highlights so much, about them, about youth, and about the rules of the society they dislike.

A common device in ConRevo has been the juxtaposition of very juvenile "heroic" archetypes against the harsh political environment in which they were made, and this introduction for Otonashi and his crew illustrates that perfectly. They are kids, with kids' rules and beliefs.
