These adorable California quail have been drawn to our front yard by the promise of a seed banquet offered by the Clarkia and Lupine seed heads that still litter the landscape! This group of California Quail is feasting on Elegant Tarweed seeds fallen from the dead stocks in the foreground. The California Quail covey that visited us this afternoon feasted for over an hour on seeds from Clarkia, CA Poppies, Blue Gilia, Riverbank Lupine, Elegant Tarweed, Oregon Sunshine, Golden Rod, Penstemon, and Seaside Daisy. None of these plants were pruned for the end of the year, instead left to feed the birds and give cover to next year's pollinators!

River Bank Lupine is a big one, with super showy flowers in late Spring and is green year around! It's a fantastic weed suppressor. Oregon Sunshine is a bright and cheerful plant! It grows up to 2 ft tall when in flower, and while not in flower tends to hover around 1 ft tall and forms a lovely silver evergreen mat. It's an excellent weed suppressor while still playing well with it's neighbors. Seaside Daisy is a looong blooming evergreen beauty! It starts blooming at the end of April and when happy and with a little deadheading can continue through November! I have 8 that are still blooming today (November 19)! Douglas Iris is Oregon's only native evergreen Pacific Coast Iris! It's extremely showy while flowering, and once the flowers have disappeared it has a beautiful clump grass appearance that continues through the Winter!

Huh... what!? That's not a squirrel.
This is one of the reasons that I don't feed the birds any more. They have plenty of food from the thousands of native plants.
It's urban Toronto... so we get rats. But I don't see them much since I took down my bird feeders about 6 years ago.

Pearly Everlasting is still blooming, though many of their flowers are going to seed now Seaside Daisy is surprising me this year. Even mid-November these plants are still blooming and producing blossoms! While most of the show has ended, Globe Gilia is still producing pretty little blue pom pom flowers in mid-November! Can't forget the Pacific Aster, which is also still producing flowers in mid-November!
