I do have to wonder how much of what we're seeing here is chickens coming home to roost for the games industry, as a decade ago we saw aggressive blacklisting and outlets being denied review copies, while at the same time various influencers being given early copies of games for uncritical hype...

Not only did they enjoy having the fawning hype, the industry enjoyed having the reactionary crowd as an attack dog who'd go after reviewers and publications for not giving high enough scores, and this is what that crowd metastasised into. An audience that actively despises the medium itself.
