Acorn Electron / BBC Micro - Chuckulus - WIP
Maybe I'll try a thread instead of quote posting stuff !.....
Fixed the flashing egg and bouncing off ladders bugs - thankfully quite simple stuff....
Time for some proper level design, as some are just too damn hard/impossible (even without the DUCK !) 🙄

Most people know that the random junk pixels printed around the edges of various Acorn Electron games are sections of game code 'hidden' in screen memory. But not all of it is actually code, because that would lead to an uneven border, so some of the junk characters are just... junk!

Today is #ChuckPeddleDay – a celebration of the brilliant mind behind the 6502!
So dig out your 6502 computers, power them up, dust them off, or just show them with pride.
Whether it’s a Commodore, Apple, Atari, BBC Micro or any homebrew project – today we honor the chip that started it all. 🚀🖥️✨

Many thanks to @rasto1968.bsky.social and @0xc0de.bsky.social for testing a very early beta version of Chuckulus.

I'm ploughing through *cough* a few issues they have bought up, one of which was the scrolling appearance of the DUCK cage at the top of level. I knew it wasn't right, that's better !

One of the best, original home computer games. Ported to so many different computers. Made by A&F Software, the name taken from the initials of the company's founders, Doug Anderson and Mike Fitzgerald

Back to this version of the game. I have added the score board gfx and related code to calculate the score etc. Game running at 50fps, still need to do tile animations. youtu.be/A6hO-ZApOjQ #GameDev #RetroGame

Some beta testing on a new eagerly awaited Elk game this morning and this afternoon spending some time on Astoraid. Play area is 64 x 64 sectors containing 32 asteroids, but you don't know where they are to start with. The "scan" screen lets you find them :) Asteroids contain different things...

I've made a load of changes to how levels and enemy movements are handled, including adding a z axis, so can now have 'background' objects (displayed dimmer), like this:

Talking of Acorn Electron Fortress, this is how far I've got with it.... slightly stalled due to stable framerate issues (and Chuckulus !).... plotting that giant wall causes the poor old Elk some problems now and again !

Just found this on a random USB stick....

I guess I was pondering this while doing 'Fortress' for the Acorn Electron (which I shall return to and finish one day), as it could use a lot of the same procedures.

Mode 1 with palette change halfway down the screen, changing red to green !

Another thing of the list: in-game text 'bubbles'

The 'GO!' bubble is a sprite, as it rises up the screen at start of play

The others are 'simply' plotted text (inverted colours) and then some calculations to plot the bubbles around it 🤯 - not enough memory left for all 4 of these to be sprites!

Another 'bug' ocurred when Harry runs toward or away from the DUCK.

It now changes attack direction every level. What it actually does is change the DUCK's orbit direction around the tower.

Harry can now run away/towards the DUCK on any level regardless of orbit direction ! 🤯

Another day, another level designed !

Splatted that keyboard bug (which wasn't - just an issue with the Harry movement logic), plus a few other things I wasn't happy with / hadn't noticed before !

The list of 'things to do' is very short...... at the moment ! 😱

Level 5 done - this highlighted a certain key combination that caused problems in the past (a kind of key clash thing)..... now the bugs mutated into a 'loop until you stop pressing these keys' feature !

Should be easy to find and fix - bit weird though !

One year ago today I posted this miniature They Live Photo I created.

Shot using two photos one of the Statue of Liberty the other of the They Live Alien then superimposed the face over the top. Cotton wool was used for the sky.

This is the most photoshopping I've done in a photo
