Alas you don't need permission to record in public places, but in private, yes, California is a two-party consent state.

I hold out hope that someone will find a technological exploit that can legally disable these things at a distance; for example, by blasting them with very bright IR light.

When I tried to call customer service to inquire, I got a recorded message telling me they couldn't take my call. Then, midway through chatting with an offshore agent, I got this... it persists despite a cookie/local-storage clearing.
