Pinch yourself: a greater Great North Road is finally here 🤩

In so many ways, it’s a role model for other arterial roads.

A new kind of route has opened up - one that's a joy to ride.

Dr Vincent O'Malley Auckland and the Invasion of the Waikato
Dr Vincent O’Malley argues that it was in the invasion of Waikato in 1863, and not either world war, that was the defining conflict in New Zealand history.

Tāmaki Makaurau: The Māori name for Auckland, means Tāmaki desired by many. This name refers to the abundance of natural resources, strategic vantage points, portage routes, and mahinga kai which first attracted Māori, and then other settlers.

Not me anticipating that this rendition of Romeo & Julie Overture I'm listening to wouldn't crescendo quite hard enough for my liking at that spot, so manually adjusting the volume on my phone up and down.

My happy boost of this week has been reliving Heated Rivalry in various clips. But one line sticks so hard & leaves me in tears (nearly) every time.

So, I turned it into a bookmark. The ink's still wet, but it'll be ready by the time #aucklandpride begins.

We've had a busy start to the year up the tower & have rung: rounds, called changes, plain hunt, Plain Bob, Grandsire, Stedman, Reverse Canterbury, Canterbury Place, St Simon's Bob; and have rung on 6 and 8.

We've also had loads of visitors (you're always welcome)

@drdrehistorian.bsky.social I know they're only conceptual, but reckon those are Fids?
Vic is lucky enough to have a reasonably extensive art collection which is often hung in public areas of various buildings. My favourite piece in the law school is this of Wellington Station from the 50s, by (extraordinarily) one of *two* Stanley Jackson's active in Wellington midcentury.

Ok, so there are quite a few holds on Heated Rivalry, and we are getting more copies but in the meantime, can we interest you in these queer sports romance novels?

Trust me, it's super obvious if you've used AI to write your letter / application / appeal / whatever. Esp if you didn't bother to reformat it.
I have some bad news. One, if you need to use ChatGPT for your graduate application letter, you are not ready for graduate school.

Two, no, not "everyone is doing it" and those who don't do it aren't "losing out." ChatGPT is not an advantage.
An impressive number of graduate applications this year used the phrase “curiosity-driven approach” 🤔

When, at some point, the Overton window shifts left. Even slightly. What we're NOT going to do is allow all those big companies, brands etc suddenly put their rainbow flag cosplay back on.

We are NOT going to allow them to pretend they didn't just drop us as they decided we weren't fashionable. 1/

Have we tried smudging parliament? How about wherever it is that they do the press talks?
*Smudging is when people burn dried sage to clear a house of any negative energy.

I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but refusing to look directly at the person serving you, and then throwing your money at them, is not how you get good service.

Throwing a large value note for a small purchase also doesn't make you look wealthy. Actually wealthy people are way more discreet lol

Tonight we ring out the old year & ring in the new one, with a short pause in the middle so our bellringers can watch the fireworks from the roof.

We've have been busy this week adding additional lighting above the bells so we can make safer progress up to the roof.

Perhaps, as we move into 2026, that we leave "faggot" as a road rage insult in 2025?

Esp on K Rd. Know your history & respect your surroundings. Plus, you're probably overreacting anyway 💕

Wonderful morning of service ringing today. We had 9 and rang doubles of Stedman & Reverse Canterbury, Plain Hunt 7, and triples of Grandsire & Plain Bob.

The church garden is looking particularly lovely today, with a crop of bananas on the way!
