Shame on @nature.com for publishing this ableist trash, and shame on the authors for writing it:

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

I was going to change my handle to Noam Zombsky but I'm still just too angry to even "too soon" that guy. He lost a lot of shine in the late '90s, which was a handy lesson on don't prop up your heroes. It's weird to see him wanting to "be a jerk off like regular privileged asshats"

I'm encouraged by how people are taking back the word "performative" as a node and verb of engagement and communication. I also like the word "demonstrative" since it's liked with love and affection and used together I think it helps show the world *being* a better place because people are in it.

This happens with*everything* now. No matter how grave the crime or one-dimensional the injustice, after four days the hivemind of American punditry decides that the Real Story is how the people upset about it are the real villains.
