Here's another processed photo of the Moon during the eclipse on Monday. This one focuses on the effect known as "Baily's Beads," which are bright points of light along the Moon's limb briefly visible in the few seconds before totality. They are caused by sunlight shining between mountains and low points on the Moon's surface, and named after British astronomer Francis Baily. The purple "flames" are actually parts of the Sun's lower atmosphere, visible beyond the silhouette of the Moon. (North is to the right in this view.)
