Science communicator & author (Catching Stardust; Fire & Ice). Science & Technology Editor at JMP Statistical Software.
This video is another part of my interview with @alexverbeek.bsky.social at the JMP Software Discovery Summit.

It was great to hear how he thinks scientists can communicate their science to wider audiences - particularly to create action around climate.

I recently had a chance to interview @alexverbeek.bsky.social at a JMP Software Discovery Summit.

It was brilliant to hear his thoughts on how we can use data to influence the public and leaders into climate action.

Publishing looks glossy from the outside. Inside? It’s built on unpaid labour.

My first book is out this year.
Here’s what I actually got paid, what my contract says, & why most authors can’t afford to do this twice.

Published Doesn’t Mean Paid.
I want to talk about money. (Ugh, I know. How crass.) Specifically, how much money authors make, or more accurately, don’t. I signed my publishing deal in 2023. My advance was £2,500. That’s it. I w...

Yay! @alcs.co.uk distribution day - or as I call it: The magic book money!

Thank you for all the work you do to pay writers. It really does mean so much to know people are using the words I put out into the world and that I get rewarded when they do!

All of my books are on this list 😢
Copyright law is being completely ignored. Most authors barely make any money from books anyway and this just makes it worse!
We are disappointed but not surprised that Meta has used millions of pirated books to develop its AI systems.

As a matter of urgency, Meta needs to compensate the rightsholders of all the works it has been exploiting.

But what can authors do? Read here:

Which is why we are endorsing the the United Nations' designation of 2029 as the International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defence.

It feels like a million years ago, but it was only 17 (although that’s still forever!). I took a break during my PhD to work on the Caribbean island of Montserrat studying the active Soufriere Hills. One of the best experiences of my life!

So this headline is nonsense BUT what does it take to keep a (planet)butt load of microbes OUT of an asteroid sample 🛰️? On the other site (because my ✉️ about bluesky is thus far being ignored) JAXA researchers commented on a few of the billion steps taken to keep Ryugu pristine 🧪 Reposting below...
Allow me to fix this @gizmodo.com headline: "Rare asteroid sample contaminated by microorganisms after exposure TO THE AIR". This team from London received an asteroid Ryugu grain from JAXA's Hayabusa2 mission 🛰️. There were no Earthy evils when they received it from JAXA then... they exposed it. 🧪😑

A chunk of rock collected from the asteroid Ryugu contains bacteria—but, unfortunately, it's not evidence of alien life.

I need a new novel to read. Anyone got suggestions? I just finished Orbital. Although that’s not my usual type of read (is there anything like it anyway? I think not).
No fantasy recommendations thanks.

Great advice here for Q&As which can be very tricky and stressful, particularly when you're new to the game. I became much more comfortable admitting I didn't know the answer as I progressed in my career. But that's often hard to do when you're early-career so these tips are great!
How to handle tricky Q&A

Getting a tough question in the Q&A is one of the things that scares people the most about presenting, happily I’ve come up with this easy 3 step method for politely not answering anything you’d rather not.

It's magic, it works, and you can be sassy or polite!

Death notices for chemists suggest perhaps not, despite the hazards found in many labs
