Is the Atlantic Ocean circulation close to tipping?
Hear the latest science as I presented it last month at the ATLAS25 event in Helsinki.
Let me know if anything is unclear, or if you see good reasons why your government shouldn't immediately act on this. 🌊

The NSW Net Zero Commission recently advised the NSW Government that export emissions and local climate harms must be considered in proposed coal expansions.

The science and the law is clear - business as usual is no longer an option.

The case follows recent Court of Appeal decision, Denman v MACH Energy, where the court found a direct causal link between export emissions from coal, and local climate harms.

It also comes after the International Court of Justice confirmed countries will be liable for transboundary climate harms.

“Here’s the thing, Bill Gates: There’s no ‘patch’ for the climate crisis. And there is no way to reboot the planet if you crash it. The only safe and reliable way out when you find yourself in a climate hole is to stop digging—and burning—fossil fuels.” — @michaelemann.bsky.social
You can’t reboot the planet if you crash it
What Gates is putting forward aren’t legitimate arguments that can be made in good faith. They are shopworn fossil fuel industry talking points.

I quite enjoyed a lot of the takedowns of Bill Gates' EA brain snap on climate. It is really deadassed in a number of ways.

But no-one mentioned the most important thing. He isn't *just* full of shit. He knows he is full of shit.

I can prove it: timinclimate.medium.com/even-bill-ga...
Even Bill Gates knows he is full of shit
Did you hear about that “one low-income country set out to cut emissions by banning synthetic fertilizers”?

The head of the Eisenhower Library objected and suggested a replica, since the swords are owned by the American people now.

The Trump regime got pissed and the head of the Eisenhower Library has now resigned.

Could explain why even new MPs fire back FF talking points when we visit them ie ‘gas is a clean transition fuel’.

In mid-latitudes, 1°C warming shifts climate belts >150km away from equator, toward poles
Closer to the poles means bigger shift
Most plant, animal species, etc live in 2°C temp range
In WA, 2°C moves Margaret River and Karri forest 300 km south
What's 300km south for you?

There's a federal senate Inquiry into University Governance right now, for good reason.

8/ And do you know why? I'm told the bean counters in the chancellory with their consultants apparently had the brainwave that each discipline major can be taught by just 3 staff if they get rid of all the content. And that will save money.

3/ My own discipline of sociology is losing 11 of 14 academics yet we have had a 65% increase in student enrolments this year and have more students than areas not being cut. Same story for other areas being hit with staff cuts.

7/ Specialist teaching is replaced with generic faculty wide units with 1000 + students, mostly online and no F2F tutorials. Macquarie wants to introduce a 'common first year' to the BA - so discipline content will be confined to 2nd and 3rd year - six units in total. No electives/option sets.
