I just finished up the commitments for my day job (an employer for whom I do not speak for or represent ), so I finally have the time to weight in a Question of the Day about UVa governance: how can we keep this kind of mess from happening ever again?

Culture flourishes in places with abundant and inexpensive floor space.
If you want cool bars, restaurants, art galleries, nightclubs, and theaters, you need (a) lots of cheap housing for workers, and (b) lots of commercial spaces where people can open a small business on a shoestring budget.

It's funny how every big city in North America has that one otherwise totally unremarkable strip mall way out in the suburbs that has been taken over by Asian restaurateurs and is now an internationally recognized foodie destination.

It's been almost 2 years since my mom died. Grieving is such an odd journey with no clear beginning, middle, or whatever comes after that... just gentle waves and loud echoes and an occasional lightning bolt out of seemingly nowhere

Conditions are so bad in the U.S. that now white folks are refugees in “their own” country, subject to arbitrary arrest and extrajudicial killing by agents of the state—things BIPOC folks have suffered since the beginning. The net of repression was always there. Now it’s widened and more visible.
We evacuated our kids out of Minneapolis this weekend and my spouse reports that as she drove them out of town she saw "multiple freeway exits where people are being pulled over." It feels like the Twin Cities is being subjugated by a hostile occupying force.

It is my job to take care of women who are abused by their partners. What I saw on that video is exactly what my patients describe hearing as they’re being strangled or shot at. This is evil. (Also love to the millions of women whose PTSD is trigger by this. Take care of yourselves)
