The hills are alive, with the sound of......
What's French for "Mahna Mahna"? 😜
For some time now, the interactions between politicians and industry have been staggeringly poor.

They only visit industrial estates if there's a photo opportunity for them wearing a hi-viz vest!
Farage: "I now understand more than I did the role of the state in strategic industries. This is why Richard and I went to Scunthorpe. If we hadn't gone to Scunthorpe, there would be no primary steel made in Britain today."

Does he genuinely think his bandwagon photo-op saved steel? NURSE! 😂 ~AA

Global issue that trade is becoming increasingly difficult for small companies. No small changes can fix that, would need governments to deprioritise the largest investors, and that's very unlikely. If anything, the situation is likely to get worse. www.ft.com/content/451e...

If Liberalism loses sight of its own history and how its own idiosyncrasies came to be, then won't it suffer the same fate?
If a political philosophy has history then does it have tradition as a consequence of that?

I would argue that yes it does.
Even us "Anglo" types have a tendency to ignore our own liberal tradition. This is not a good thing.

I blame a lot of my fellow liberals for not inquiring where our ideas come from. Liberalism isn't just Anglo-American. There are influences from France, Germany, Italy, South America and more.
Do you think that we progressives neglect our own history in general?

Regardless of how much of it comes from the Netherlands.

The thing holding #Barnsley back is that the cool kids won't touch the place, but to be perfectly honest, the cool kids are missing out big time by overlooking the place.

Barnsley is very underrated these days.
That said, as much has there been some improvement in Sheffield town centre recently, #Barnsley town centre is still ahead of its much bigger neighbour right now.
It seems that the terrible buskers that afflicted The Moor in Sheffield have decamped to Barnsley town centre.

Just been treated to an absolute butchering of "Imagine"! 🥴
I think this is dead right sadly. People are interacting with each other less and less, and it's affecting everything. Usually for the worst.

Socialising with others is a major part of what it means to be human!
I don't know if this is right or not (I doubt it) but it does make me think that more people staying in is the last thing society needs. Between the internet, cost of living and the legacy of lockdown, we have a leaving-the-house crisis that manifests in everything from mental health to politics
Former cinema manager here. Chain cinemas will mostly close and independent cinemas will die out completely in the next couple decades. The costs are just not worth it. It's far too convenient and cheaper to watch films at home.

Immigration to the UK is absolutely cratering in a way we've never seen before. Falling like a stone. We've got to attract far more migrants, or we're all going to be dressed in rags and scrabbling for leftover coal in spoil tips. Desperate need to increase immigration. ukandeu.ac.uk/the-coming-c...

Definitely not a good omen for the future if people are pulling stunts like this with AI.
A construction firm has been excluded from a tender for road maintenance in Poland after its bid was found to have been generated by AI, which cited non-existent tax rulings to justify the costs, which were the lowest among all the offers.

Could somebody explain to me how individualism is somehow "rugged"?

I fail to see how sitting on your own is somehow any more manly than working as a team.
A whole lot of people believe in rugged individualism until it’s time to be ruggedly individual 👀
So noticing that Hypnoboobs man has a number of glaring red flags somehow makes you "degenerate"?

Definitely becoming ever more difficult to avoid the conclusion that Mr Hypnoboobs is running something of a personality cult.
Just heard Harriet Harman say Zack Polanski is a cross between Nigel Farage and Jeremy Corbyn which means you can add potty Blairite fossils to the ever growing list of political degenerates tugging their collars over him.
Birthday book haul.

Will reading Caesars Histories make me sympathise with Cato the Younger? 🤔🤣
The greatest happiness of the greatest number is an outstanding concept that's led to numerous outstanding policies.
Also worth remembering that it's not just us Liberals who have these issues.

Labour has the same problem of lacking a big vision. And it's more pronounced for them as they are the ones in office right now!
This is one of many reasons why I consider the threat of "Christian Nationalism" outside of America to be overstated.

Its adherents don't have much, if any interest in spreading their message to us non-American plebs.
Anyone else remember when WW was arguing with Neil Shenvi about immigration because "immigrants are bringing Islam here," and NS asked WW "Don't we want other countries to accept our Christian missionaries," and WW was like "Why would we?"

Foreign missions work is outside CN's focus.
An extremely accurate depiction of my former Tory MP Miriam Cates!

Some people:
“Britain is full! We can’t have anymore people!”

Those same people:
“Have you seen the UK’s birth rate? We urgently need to have more babies!”
An article that shows much of the problem entirely by accident.

Lots of mealy mouthed platitudes with no attempt to offer concrete solutions or address people as human beings instead of numbers on a spreadsheet.
Progressives are not effectively speaking to the challenges and aspirations of many young men in Britain.

With figures across the far right queuing up to take advantage, I’ve written for @newstatesman1913.bsky.social about why we need to fix that, fast 👇

Liberal society has failed young men
The left must learn from Andrew Tate

Beyond all this, Liberalism in 2025 needs some sort of big vision.

We tend to be great at the small things but struggle to express a big vision of a better society and how we want to achieve that.
