Okay, hear me out: what if instead of being a portal to pain and suffering, a browser tab could, like, just do awesome audio stuff for you for free?

It's real. A single index file does all the basic tasks you need for audio editing, in a browser tab, thanks to @littlescale.bsky.social
littlescale's Simple Audio Editor: a free, no-install audio editor in your browser - CDM Create Digital Music
Prolific as always, Sebastian Tomczak (aka littlescale) just dropped this gem. What do you need nine times out of ten from an audio editor? Visualize, check levels, trim, gain, fade, reverse, normaliz...

People are rightly making fun of the "order pizza with AI" story, but tech has a long tradition of trying to shorten the one-minute phone call to the pizza place by putting a big Rube Goldberg machine in front of it

As someone who will immediately watch any rotoscoped animation, 100 Meters was very good

Absolutely loved the continuous shot here, going from the runners to the stadium staff and back again

Breaking -- thanks to the Surge Synth Team, Mac, Windows, and Linux are all stable with downloadable installers. Fantastic. And some notes about why this matters:
OB-Xf, free and open-source Oberheim-inspired synth, is now in beta - CDM Create Digital Music
Here’s a good way to start 2026: the folks at Surge Synth Team now have their free and open-source OB-Xf synth in beta status in nightlies, with 1.0 just around the corner. And that means this long-ru...

Myst Online is genuinely free and comes with the Ages Beyond Myst single-player portion, it still holds up as a good (co-op!) puzzle adventure and will run on nearly everything
Myst Online never really had the numbers to succeed as a big Live Service game, but as a community passion project? It is exactly the right size and has grown so much over the years.
The Winter 2025 update for Myst Online: Uru Live (again) is now live, featuring updates to Chiso Preniv, Eder Naybree, Explorers' Emporium, Kalamee and Sameehn! For more info, visit mystonline.com. #Myst #Uru #ANewEraInDni @cyan.com

First thought when reading about the Anna's Archive Spotify dump: "how high would you have to set the playback speed to stand a chance of listening through 300 TB of music, anyhow?"

Consider making 2026 the Year of the Personal Website. Even a little thing on Neocities works. It’s just nice to have a home base on the internet that you don’t have to deal with bsky mods are random popping into every post and if something goes wrong with your host, you just move it elsewhere

This is neat if you're mixing/mastering sound, it's not a gamechanger but it is a handy plugin for just getting a combined spectrogram/loudness analysis up quickly
Native Instruments & iZotope are offering Insight 2 as a free download until December 31st.

Finished Bits & Bops, very fun game in the vein of Rhythm Heaven - thankfully a bit more forgiving than RH, but it also loves a good visual fakeout to make sure you're paying attention to the beat

What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Hopefully: Implementing custom word-wrapping logic in PostScript - fun exercise in stack-based programming, but in the end the better solution was to make PDFs (bah) directly
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Archival research feels like it’s full of these, but then there’s always one throwback archive with a microfiche machine or a paper catalogue (or, indeed: NARA)
What skill did you master that you will never, ever use again?

Summer of '95 I had a job assembling single-use film cameras, which I did enough that I can still perform the actions. I don't think they even sell them anymore, but even if they do I'm certainly never going to be making them again!
