It's a somewhat different way of doing a PhD, and the American faculty would have to relinquish some level of holding power over students, which may be unpalatable to many of them. Would also require attaining higher level of technical specialism beforehand; BS unlikely to change so get an MS first?

My entire professional life happened due to social media. I only applied to my first job due to a Twitter recommendation from the person who became my mentor there. All my talks, magazine articles, some journal articles came about through socials.

Years ago, I always waved hello to a churchyard gardener as I cycled to work. One day he flagged me down so we could introduce ourselves properly. On hearing I do sci, he said "oh, do you do the thing where you have the tubes and the other little tubes, and you pour liquid between the tubes?" Yes!
