Coupling’s changing shape.

Do palladium clusters really retain their structures during coupling reactions? Glad to report our journey into following these reactions by X-rays is now out (1/2):

Investigating Transformations in Catalytic Pathways and Site Selectivity of Pd3 Nanocluster-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions
Atom-precise nanoclusters (NCs) of Pd have emerged as highly active and selective catalytic systems for cross-coupling and hydrogenation reactions. The unique Pd speciation in NCs has enabled unconven...

Out now in JACS! We show that under typical Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling conditions, bulky ligands can promote palladium-catalyzed protodeboronation.

Bulky Phosphine Ligands Promote Palladium-Catalyzed Protodeboronation
The Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction is plagued by protodeboronation, an undesirable side reaction with water that consumes the boronic acid derivatives required for the cross-coupling reaction....

Molecule 💥 of 💥 the 💥 year!
There wasn't a clear winner this year for me. But the #chemchat -esque idea of an inverted sandwich is pretty cool.

Is a Malteser an inverted sandwich?
It's that time again: @cenmag.bsky.social 's molecule of the year poll is now OPEN! Check out the contenders, lovingly curated by yours truly from past C&EN stories, and vote for your favorite by Dec. 11

Mild unimportant gripe of the day:

Finding vegan cheese in between the cheese is annoying and takes ages, especially when by definition its buyers are possibly not familiar with lots of cheese brands. It was better when non-dairy dairy had its own section! (At supermarkets near me) #5STheCheese

I had the option of getting this comp chem book as a physical book or an eBook. Normally I read pdfs on Kindle, and the eBook cost less, so I went with that.

They have now sent me a link to an awkward, locked-down platform called VitalSource. I have regrets 😂 I'll know for next time...
