Look how pretty she is! I received my author copies of /Practices & Narratives of Early Modern Piracy/ today (officially published by @amsterdamupress.bsky.social on Monday). Will post more about individual chapters (including my own) next week - in the meantime, do ask your library to order a copy!

2 days at the annual #BritCult2025 conference. There was a sense of urgency among those of us who practice queer studies not only but perhaps especially as queer individuals in times where our fellows‘ mere being is perceived as a threat (to what exactly, though?) in many parts of the world.
#britcult2025 on queering religion, menstruation and literary reception; on being haunted by the ghosts of our past and taking strength in community for what lies ahead of us; on reading reparatively and listening to each other - thank you so much to everyone for these past 2 days!

Thanks to @femsista.bsky.social recommendation from her keynote at #BritCult2025 , I’ve got a local snack to try on my way home, the pepper pretzel 🥨 (Tiny conference duck, though overshadowed by it in size but not in cuteness, travels with me 🦆). @susannegruss.bsky.social @jennyleetsch.bsky.social

Marvellous couple of days in beautiful Bamberg for BritCult! Congratulation to @susannegruss.bsky.social and all the organising team for a really great conference, and for reminding me that it was high time I (re)visited Oberfranken!

It's cold, there is a tiny bit of snow. Almost 100 conference speakers and participants are on their way to Bamberg today, most of them by train. It's fortunate that DB has a long history of dealing really well with the first snow of the year, right? RIGHT??? #britcult2025

We are already excited for the conference!!
Currently finishing a paper and co-ordinating the details of conference. Stressful, but: almost 100 people registered for our feminist/gender studies conference in late November, & that makes me VERY happy (also slightly panicked, because the room might be too small, but mostly happy). #Britcult2025

Next week: 8 hours of teaching, a conference, a 10th birthday.
Today: deep-cleaning 9yo's room to make space for those presents (it only took us 9 hours).
Tomorrow: laundry, some very belated writing.

The office is full of name tags, folders, coffee cups, plates, housekeeping notes, and 90 confirmations of attendance I still need to sign. I am ready for this conference to be over.

Yesterday: Witchcraft workshop (together with @allisonlemley.bsky.social and @femsista.bsky.social). And yes, students got tiny cauldrons with sweets. A long day, but really productive and fun!

What were the most popular plays in 16/17 century? In no order, a non-exhaustive list: Cambyses, Tamburlaines, Spanish Tragedy, Jew of Malta, Faustus, Mucedorus, 1 Henry IV, Hamlet, Othello, A Game at Chess, a bunch of B&F: Philaster, Maid's Tragedy, Scornful Lady, Cupid's Revenge. Others?

Lots of familiar BritCult faces at the fantastic "The Company We Keep" workshop in Frankfurt (sponsored by Britcult!). The association's president, 2 members of the advisory committee, one of the organisers of #BritCult2025, and the unimpressed guy in the middle are looking forward to #BritCult2025!

Complaining about workload, looking forward to a conference - the eternal cycle of academic life. Working on a fungal paper for "The Company We Keep - Figurations, Narratives, and Practices of Co-Living in Common Spaces" (Frankfurt University, 31 October - 01 November).

Wondering why I never seem to have enough time for the things that need to be done, then counted conference papers, guest lectures and workshop contributions this year. Not a humble brag, I think I might need an official no committee, I am not doing a great job at saying no to things myself.

„Wir haben mal 1 KI gefragt“, heißt es dieser Tage beiläufig in allen möglichen Kontexten, häufig ohne jeden erkennbaren Mehrwert, einfach, weil man‘s kann. Das ist Normalisierung der Nutzung von Fake-Schleudern, die Kreativen die Jobs streitig machen & das Internet mit Slop zumüllen. Was soll das?
