The threat to freedom of the press is real, we used to say. Can't say that any more. It's not a threat. The first small laps in a far larger wave are here.

That part in blue. Agonizingly true. What looked sturdy was way flimsier than we — than I — thought. view.newsletters.cnn.com/messages/176...

A powerful Atlantic piece on federal workers fired or forced out over the past year.

Federal employees spend their careers serving communities, protecting public health and safety, and keeping essential government functions running, often without recognition.

The Purged
Donald Trump’s destruction of the civil service is a tragedy not just for the roughly 300,000 workers who have been discarded, but for an entire nation.

“Me 10 years ago: Yes, of course feminism is important, but do feminists always have to be so radical?

Me today: How can feminists have so much diplomatic self-control, and why haven't they set everything on fire already?”

Ice? Yeah, we have plenty of it.
USA:
ICE? Yeah, they are above the law and can shoot you in the face.

ICE? Tja, der hat halt meistens Verspätung.

“They always target the weakest first.

And the spreading fire will engulf the next weakest.

Many overlook the fact that they, too, could one day be the weakest.

So if you don't stand up against it out of decency, you should at least do it out of selfishness.”

Deferring once again to FDR.
"...a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power."

It's so fascinating to contrast the Atlantic's hollow scolding with a genuinely helpful attempt to inform Americans about what's going on. Personally I think if you want the left to pay more attention to something, maybe just write about it in your magazine!

If you follow right-wing psychos you know this is all they have posted about for days. Instead of pointing out how desperate these hypocrisy arguments are getting, the Atlantic commissioned someone to make it in more polite-sounding language.

the fact that these lurid scenarios somehow treat trump as the only actor and do not contemplate the response of state and local officials, law enforcement, activists and others is a sign that they are less a hard-nosed analysis and more an expression of fear and anxiety.

Being effective in anything you're doing requires being clear eyed and realistic about Trump's goals here. That includes whether you want to help him, run against him, do journalism, activism, or simply to engage in discourse. Punditry or journalism that dismisses the threat here is ineffective.
