I've already mentioned that this year I rediscovered the joys of re-reading books because of the reading group I'm leading. Now re-reading Rakesfall and it's such a rewarding experience. You remember the shape of things if not the details and you see how the shape is wrought from the first page.

Read The Works of Vermin!!! But also listen to me talk about why the French Second Empire and the Paris Commune are so interesting, an essay I am going to write about it, and the potentials/horrors of living in a modern city! Thanks @hironennes.bsky.social for writing such an amazing book!

I am of the firm conviction that this is one of the most beautiful tracks ever recorded.

I have now received the first completely left of field amazing album of 2026 and I can't wait to show it all of you in full. Incredibly moving, string-forward funeral doom/drone from Denmark. Will premiere in full on the blog closer to release date!

Good vocals are important for all styles of music but if you're making heavy metal and I don't like your vocalist, there is zero chance I'm going to be a fan.

I'm so sad. Last few months I have just been struck, more and more often, with just deep sadness at how I have to spend the majority of my team: working. The issue is not working itself, I like solving problems and winning. The issue is the smarmy calls, the lies, the wheeling and dealing.

The amount of genuinely stupid people who manages multi-million dollar companies that I meet for my job just eats away at my soul.

I really liked Alex Jeffers' A Mourning Coat and hope to discuss it more in length somewhere! For now, some quick thoughts on it in this episode, plus some stuff about depression, why talk to people online, and a KILLER song at the end.

Continuing to dive into Saint-Saëns has unavoidably led me to Arthur Rubenstein. My god man. What a titan.

Among the other myriad horrors of flying, it always reminds me how much we as a society (by which I mean humans, not even just the US) bungled up COVID. No one is wearing masks. Forget COVID! Flu? RSV? Wearing masks is such an easy thing to do and no one is doing it because of a fucking culture war.
