My latest post on Substack looks at Mo Salah's statistics with and without Trent Alexander Arnold.

Safe to say, Mo is better with Trent on the field and will certainly miss LFC's #66.

The 2021-2022 title race would have looked different if penalties had been awarded fairly.

LFC finished just one point behind City (93 vs. 92), and while LFC's penalty count aligned with expectations, City received about two more penalties than their underlying attacking numbers.
April 4, 2025 at 4:23 PM
Seeing a lot of discourse online about LFC's penalty 'luck.'

AFC experienced that same penalty 'luck' last season.

Even if you adjust the table for penalty 'luck', LFC would be 7 points ahead of AFC.

When LFC get 9 penalties it's luck. When AFC get 10 it's par for course?

Arsenal are one of the most screwed over teams by refs in general though.

They get -1.4 penalties less than they should per season.

Spurs the most screwed over team by refs (-3 fewer penalties per season)

City most favored by the refs.

My latest post on Mo Salah's contract conundrum is now available.

Explores why the decision to sign him to a new contract is so much harder than the decision to extend/sell Firmino and Mane.

Also looks at other players who spent ages 32-35 in top 5 leagues as comps.

Thanks for sharing @culturedfootball.bsky.social. Here’s my post on benchmarking forwards that looks at who could potentially be an upgrade on Luis Diaz.
March 18, 2025 at 9:35 AM
Built a model to predict a player’s non-penalty G+A, factoring in historical performance, age, playing time, league quality, and team strength.

Applied it to LFC’s forward decisions—Sadio Mané’s sale made sense. He’d been underperforming for a while relative to expectations.
March 17, 2025 at 3:20 PM
Players who have taken a leap this season:

Dembélé (+12.2 G&A above prediction)
Isak (+9.6)
Schick (+8.8)
Salah (+8.7)
Barcola (+8.4)

They have significantly exceeded their predicted G&A, indicating standout performances relative to their predicted levels.

Luis Diaz has been solid this season (13 non-penalty G+A in ~1850 mins) for Liverpool, currently top of the Premier League. But is that enough for a forward at his peak on a title-contending team?
March 16, 2025 at 11:22 AM
How does Trent's behavior change when Liverpool are losing or drawing at half time?

1. More longer risk, forward passes into Szoboszlai and Salah. Greater than 30% increase in these kind of passes in the second half if LFC are losing or drawing.

1/ Trent Alexander-Arnold’s passing has shifted this season, and it tells us a lot about Liverpool’s tactics. His passes fall into four main types—each revealing how the team is playing. Let’s break it down 👇

1/ Trent Alexander-Arnold’s passing is evolving. Earlier in the season, he inverted into midfield, controlling play centrally. Now? He’s staying deeper and playing more long passes, bypassing midfield entirely. Here’s what’s changed 👇

In my latest post, I took a look at how Arne Slot has tweaked TAA's position when Liverpool have possession of the ball. TAA starts the season receiving the ball all over the field. In recent weeks however, Slot has created a more structured role for him. Check it out!

Anyone know where I can get player tracking data for football?

Tried reaching out to @optaanalyst.optajoe.com but haven’t heard back from them.

On average age of starting XIs, Liverpool have been older than City and Arsenal this season.

But factor in how much club football the squads have played in their careers and it’s a different story.

Pep Guardiola recently selected his joint-youngest Manchester City side. How does the relative age profile of the City, Arsenal and Liverpool squads look?

After making in-game adjustments:
- Arteta improves Arsenal’s xGD by +0.25 when drawing but sees it drop to -0.2 when losing.
- Slot, meanwhile, boosts xGD by +0.6 when drawing and a massive +1.4 when losing.
Slot’s in-game adjustments clearly have a bigger impact.

Arne Slot’s subs can make or break Liverpool. Against Forest, he went all-out attack, pulling Mac Allister & Konaté, shifting Trent, and leaving Van Dijk alone at the back—chaos followed. At Ipswich, a simple Konaté sub stabilized the team. Genius or gamble?

Here’s something else that I found interesting:

Younger players age (18-23) appear to be playing more minutes in recent years than ever before.

After the age of 23 players are playing fewer average minutes than ever before.

There are similar trends across the 5 big leagues.

Following up on @paultomkins.bsky.social post which includes plots for the EPL. But what’s interesting is that no team in La Liga suffers from the negative foul imbalance with increasing possession like Liverpool does.

I plan on looking at Ligue 1, Bundesliga and Serie A later today.

Interesting analysis by @paultomkins.bsky.social:

substack.com/home/post/p-...

I took a look at fouls given this season by referee and doesn’t appear to be bias against Liverpool here based on the referee.

That being said, this doesn’t look at the foul balance, which is pretty alarming.

My previous post looked at Ryan Gravenberch being shut down by the opposition. If he's unable to get on the ball as much as he did before where are those touches going?

Alexis Mac Allister? No
Dominik Szoboszlai? No
Andrew Robertson? Maybe...
February 21, 2025 at 9:39 PM
Been reading a lot about Ryan Gravenberch lately. There’s a lot of speculation that he's running out of steam and hitting a wall.

One thing that's clear is that opposition players are definitely putting him in a cage and shutting him down.

It all comes down to the number of passes he receives 🧵

Despite a lot of the panic, #LFC 2024-2025 been better in terms of xGD than #LFC 2018-2019 and #LFC 2019-2020.

#Arsenal also included here for context to show where they are at.

#LFC 2024-2025 performing at a very high level compared to teams that finished 1st/2nd since 2014-2015 season.
