Your jokes about Trump are extremely insensitive to those of us who are also bereft that we didn’t get the Nobel peace prize

The axolotl is called the Relaxalotl and just in general I think I like the vibe of this place's website much more than the place I'm already going to.

I've just noticed that when I sign off to the undergrads I'm working with I write "have a relaxing weekend" and when I sign off with the PhDs I write "have a productive weekend" and argh I'm just reinforcing the system

In which, as usual, prosody does almost all the indexical and semantic work at the same time and the lexical content is just along for the ride

I would respect this whole conversation a lot more if "We have to use AI" finished truthfully with "because powerful people are forcing us" instead of leaving it like it could be pixies
tedmccormick.bsky.social
A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

"The idea for this project came about when I read a discussion of whether LDA was the most common 6502 instruction and it occurred to me that this, along with a lot of subtleties, is a very "corpus linguistics" question to ask."

Hey this looks fun :-D

Okay, I've started a repo (and even came up with a Tolkien-inspired acronym)! If you're interested, star / watch the repo. I'll start some discussions there too.

I've been waiting for the transcript for this one, but something tells me it's one I want to actually HEAR :-D

Oh owwww how could you do Diego and PharaohKatt like that?! @becauselanguage.com

Yeah Orchy DEFINITELY has a different sense for me now lol
termy.bsky.social
(The other example of genericisation I noticed was Orchy, a brand of orange juice very popular for the crafting of bongs. ANY sort of bong made from ANY brand of orange juice bottle was called an "Orchy bong" at my school.)

Heh PRIMA-ry school.

Also I totally forgot most USian accents are rhotic lol
termy.bsky.social
HUH TIL at least some USians pronounce it, what, /'pɹɪmə/?

I (AusEng) have /ɑe/ for both senses; /pɹi:mə/ for me is a brand of juice box (and also one of the earliest examples of genericisation I ever noticed as a child, as Prima was used to refer to any juice box at one of my primary schools.
merriam-webster.com
Here’s a primer on ‘primer.’

It’s pronounced ‘PRIMM-er’ if you mean “a small book” or “a short informative piece of writing.”

It’s pronounced ‘PRY-mer’ if you mean “an initial coat of paint.”

Also feeling really guilty about taking 3 or 4 days of accrued leave in December for a wedding, (1) because I hate weddings with all their rules and expectations, but (2) I just feel guilty taking leave even though I've earned it. What is wrong with me?!
termy.bsky.social
ARGH I'm starting work late today because I've accrued a bunch of TOIL and didn't get home from work until 11pm last night

and I'm so stressed about taking time off I GOT UP EXTRA EARLY AND STARTED WORKING.

I have no idea if the problem's with me or just *waves hands*.

Just be confident that whatever they think about that person in OUR lives, future generations aren't gonna judge him well (unless conservatives really do finally end history studies, in which case future generations aren't gonna judge him at all).
