Yeah, back in the day, Paramount didn't really have an issue with fan films so long as they told original stories. They didn't even really have an issue with fan films using Trek actors so long as they weren't playing their canonical characters.
In the decade since Star Trek Beyond, we have gotten Discovery, Short Treks, Picard, Prodigy, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, Section 31, Starfleet Academy, Scouts and Khan. I’d say that’s a fair trade.
