This is an angle people forget about. "Xbox" briefly superseded PlayStation as "generic term for games consoles used by people who don't play games" in spite of the brand being tied to one of the largest consumer electronics recalls ever. They squandered that in under a decade.

Crazy how the Xbox brand went from being indestructible despite *everyone’s* 360 breaking, to MS going outta its way to flush that all down the toilet by trying to turn the Xbox One into an advertising layer Trojan Horse’d into normies’ TVs, to just giving up on making games after the One failed.

i think people are very ready to blame xbox's current misfortunes on the xbox one without internalizing that phil spencer has had like 12 years to right the ship and his ideas were "what if we stopped trying to sell games and became a subscription service also what if we didn't ship any new games"

This. By the end of the Xbox one Microsoft had A TON of goodwill. I preferred playing on my One X than my PS4. The hardware team dropped the Series X with features in 2020 that the PS5 didn’t have. It was all down to the leadership and they SQUANDERED it.

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
