Two things both true:

The loved ones of Venezuelans are celebrating that they are no longer in CECOT; some are celebrating their return home.

And.

It is a violation of international law to cause someone to be returned where they’ll be persecuted. Most of them never got a chance to make that case.

It has occurred to me that y'all might not know who Mayor Ras Baraka is. So I'm going to take a moment out of grading to do my duty as a Jersey girl and teach you a thing. Mayor Baraka is the 40th mayor of the Newark, NJ, the city that will forever be Jersey's heartbeat.

There’s so much defensive work needed right now, but I also think the moment is ripe for abolitionists to also go on offense locally—ICE is an extension/form of policing, we have to make connections on the need to eliminate police capacity to round people up in the first place!!!

“Nobody is above the law” is a rich statement to make when ya’lls President has 34 felony convictions and over two dozen sexual misconduct allegations. Playing in our faces with nonsense and selective amnesia.

I'd also add, mocking of disabled people who are still taking Covid precautions has also normalized anti-disability biases.
Don’t be surprised if the next marginalized community the far right decides to target and demonized is the disabled community.

The normalization of the ‘R-word,’ acceptance pronatalist eugenics, and the proposal there should be a registry of people on the autism spectrum.

When people break the law, and their actions are righteous and appropriate, we should applaud them. When people abide by or enforce the law, and their actions are repugnant, we should condemn them. We should never pretend the law is a moral dividing line.

if u are fuming at mass deportation of migrants to El Salvador's CECOT prison, u should also be fuming that people are being deported at all. Plus, much of the $ for the securitization & border externalization & carceral regimes in Central America has LONG come from US-backed neoliberal war on drugs

My inability to believe what #philanthropy says because I see what it does is rooted in the many examples where its chosen perpetuity & safety over its purpose. The pressures of this political moment are growing the fissures even more. And frankly it’s not an institution I’m interested in saving.
