@tobyfox.undertale.com has been spending over a decade planning Deltarune, so I'm wondering if stuff like that as of yet unused "kill" animation where enemies disintegrate might just be part of the process of a game that has likely came up with many different concepts over that length of time.

Little reminder that it’s okay to use a rewind feature in a game if it’s available. You don’t have to prove yourself to anyone. Play smarter, not harder.
